The AFL season is more than a month old and it is proving once again to be a very close competition.
Only Geelong and St Kilda remain unbeaten while every side has won at least one match.
The Lions form has been inconsistent to date but we have shown patches of being a really good side. Our third quarter against the Eagles helped get us over the line in Round 1 at the Gabba while we also played some pretty good footy in our first half against the Magpies in Round 4.
Our win against Sydney in Round 3 was probably the only time this season that we have been able to string four consistent quarters of football together, and the results showed.
Our most recent loss against Geelong at Kardinia Park was probably the worst I have experienced in my five-year career. The scoreboard and the stats showed they beat us absolutely everywhere.
It certainly wasnt a nice way to celebrate my 50th AFL match.
Thankfully we were able to turn it around pretty quickly against Essendon at the Gabba last Saturday night. The win against the Bombers certainly helped restore our confidence and self-belief.
I understand the Sunshine Coast Juniors are having a Positive or Pointless weekend on 8-10 May to promote positive comments from the football community which I think is a great idea.
I think it is really important, particularly in the junior ranks to encourage participation of both players and umpires. Im a big believer in positive reinforcement in helping develop our code up here in Queensland. That sort of encouragement has certainly helped me in my footy career.
It is the responsibility of the players, officials, coaches, parents and supporters to stay positive during junior matches rather than attack the opposition, team-mates or the umpire.
While everyone likes to win games, junior footy is meant to be enjoyed regardless of the result.
