On a Saturday evening 18th April many youngsters were treated to a visit from two very special people at Fishermans Rd. Brisbane Lions Captain Jonathon Brown and Vice Captain Simon Black dropped in less than 24 hours after their team succumbed to that team we all love to hate, Collingwood.
In conjunction with local radio station Hot91, AFL Queensland Sunshine Coast were proud to have the two Lions triple premiership players on site, one who also boasts a Brownlow medal to his name and a few all Australian jumpers thrown in (not bad AFL talent).
The boys in true rock star style were a few minutes late, but those in attendance received numerous giveaways courtesy of Hot91 and Rebel Sport to keep themselves amused. Finally the boys arrived to tumultuous cheers and high fives up the line that was to act as a signature line. Jumpers, footies, posters and all manner of knick knacks were produced for the boys to sign and photo opportunities were aplenty for the many adoring fans, with mums placing kids and babies as secondary objects into the photos. (Gee a few of those mums get a bit excited).
After signing millions of bits of merchandise, the kids in attendance finally got to have a kick and a catch with the boys, Browny putting up many bombs for the brave, whilst Blacky held footballs over the NAB tackle bag for players to show off their best speckies on. One little fella unfortunately having a bit of that Dale Daisy Thomas cheek and spring about him and proudly sporting a Collingwood jumper, Blacky had to hold the football for (I reckon he may have liked to have evened up the head high contact and resultant stitches above the left eye, courtesy of Friday night). After plenty of easy going Saturday evening fun, Brown ventured indoors to see the Maroochydore Roos senior boys whilst Blacky took on a few youngsters in a goal kicking competition.
Finally the two boys got inside to mix with the local Roos seniors, a couple of cheeky Collingwood supporters in the crowd. But all in all the two hours the boys were on site was an absolute thrill for all at Fish Park. No doubt plenty of youngsters have gone away from Saturday evening inspired after rubbing shoulders with these two great Lions players, plenty of signatures and photos to show off.
Our thanks are warmly given to Hot91 for making this opportunity possibly and the fantastic manner in which Browny and Blacky participated in a great community event.
