Saturday 21st March saw the AFL Queensland Sunshine Coast team get active in their launching of the 2009 AFL season. The venue was Rebel Sport Maroochydore, indoors gratefully as outside, the weather was at times extreme â very humid and then buckets of rain. The rain came down soon after kick off and was solid enough to damage Warwickâs beautiful mullet â lucky we dragged him inside before too much damage could be done.
With the HOT 91 team inside outside broadcasting, we had the happy duo of Todd (alias Warwick Capper) and Dave from the morning show to keep all amused whilst bellowing âhappy new footy seasonâ across the airwaves. There is no doubt that these two men are a little out there and keep all amused as they cleverly rebound off each other.
We at AFLQ SC were most fortunate through our corporate partnerships to have three fantastic backers to this event with Rebel Sport, HOT 91 and the Brisbane Lions jumping on board. From the Lions den the world famous Bernie âGabbaâ Vegas was on site performing handstands at the thought his Lions were a week away from the hurly burly AFL action. Bernie was present with plenty of giveaways and a few major prizes for the in-store activities that Development Officers Mal and Paul had on the go.
The store was cleared to give room for a handball amphitheatre, and plenty of space for Bernie to get up to his old party tricks of harassing kids, of particular interest to Bernie were two dressed in Hawthorn jumpers. He nearly ate them two alive showing all just how hungry the Lions are for finals success in 2009. A few Auskick youngsters took opportunity to create photos to enter in the term one AFLQSC/Rebel Sport photo competition; whilst âin store with their footyâ, the theme of our term one competition.
Visiting the store was ex Sydney Swans player Ben Mathews for a live on air chat where all things Swans and the AFL were discussed. âWarwickâ pressed the 198 game premiership Swans player hard as to who he believed was the greatest ever Swan, all whilst preening himself. Ben also informed the audience of his coming days where he will be playing for the Maroochy North Shore Roos; Saturday 28th March the Roos are at home at Fishermans Rd. Many thanks and our best wishes are passed on to Ben for joining us at Rebel Sport and giving kids in attendance some elite level handball pointers.
With a Saturday season launch 20% discount store wide on offer plenty of bargains were to be found. Sarah Kelly and all the Maroochydore Rebel Store staff were kept well on the hop, the staff constantly tested in the art of evasive action whilst delivering customer service, ducking enthusiastically delivered handballs. Still every one smiled and why not; the AFL season was just five days away â like a second Christmas in three months.
Our biggest thanks are passed onto Rebel Sport Maroochydore, HOT 91 and the Brisbane Lions for helping our AFLQ staff get season 09 launched, in the manner of a Malcolm Blight torpedo punt â google that one!
So to all enjoy the AFL in 09, from grassroots playtime to the big boys big time.
