Late November saw the junior demons return united to the den, as the Pomona seniors and juniors once again became one all powerful football club. Having operated as separate entities for the past decade or more, the unification was finally derived that will see the Demons operate the club administration as one from season 2009.
In recent times under the leadership of current President Drew Meloni the senior Demons have offered much match day support to the Junior Demons – the mountain men are always vocal in their positive support to a Demon cause.
The club over the course of 35 years since its 1973 inception has operated in many ways, from Cooroy to Pomona; Bombers to Demons. Recent years has seen the juniors and seniors operating independently whilst always being fierce to the Pomona, Cooroy and Districts AFL cause.
The formation of the current senior club Pomona, Cooroy & Districts came as a result of many local towns seeing the need to combine in an effort towards a stronger competitive unit in Sunshine Coast footy. The formation of the combined team had the club based at the Pomona Show grounds oval in Exhibition Street, whilst it was not a suitable home field due to slope. Around 1976 the search began for a new home that resulted in a lease being taken up in 1977 on land at the current Reserve Road site. Much work followed in the ensuing years to finally have a clubhouse and oval ready for opening in March 1981. The club house building is the old Domestic Science building from Pomona School.
Now it is time for the club to unite for the common cause of AFL in a tight country family club way. This change to club structure wasn’t taken lightly as many months of planning and debate took place during the course of season 2008 in an effort to make all accepting and understanding to the benefits. Certainly there is now much excitement at the management level of the united club as the future is planned on a combined front.
In attendance at this historic AGM was Betty Davis, who with late husband Fred and a few others finally achieved their dream of founding a local AFL club in Cooroy all those years ago. Betty is most happy to see change and unity as was witnessed by her keenness at the AGM to get the motions of change happening.
The Demons are a proud lot, whilst coming from a small rural foothold in the northern areas of our region they don’t have a large city to call upon to support their club but make up for this in heart.
Recent years has seen a very strong group of youth move through the junior end of the club from “Dasher” Royal and Blake Magin now playing seniors to a fine group of under 12 footballers headed by Billy Mahony, Michael Daddow, Brad Forbes and more. In between there is another multitude of Magins; Rhys currently a rookie at Essendon with younger twin brothers in Alik and Lanze currently trying their fortunes as 17 year olds with the Gold Coast 17 team. Also at the GC17 level is 16 year old Jake Crawford who has also been at the Demons den for many years. With these boys there are numerous others spread through Demon teams who have in recent years left their mark on junior AFL footy across this region. As Pomona teams have played regular finals footy; with many boys representing our regions youth teams of the Suncoast Power. No one ever expects an easy game of footy when faced up to a Blue and Gold Demons outfit, they enjoy hard at it footy and form strong mate ship off the paddock.
One common thread for a large number of years is old timer Billy Magin – he has played and coached most of his winter months away with his beloved mountain men. Billy was recently inducted into the AFL Queensland Hall of Fame – that story has already been highlighted.
To Drew and his solid band of committee we wish them all the best as they look to a new Pomona, Cooroy & District AFC era all under the one roof singing the Demon club song loud and proud.
