Last week over 250 aspiring Under 12s footballers descended on Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville, North Queensland for the Queensland Under 12 School Boys State championships.
Twelve teams from across Queensland took part in the Championships all striving for selection in the State Squad.
The 12 teams were split into two division, Metropolitan and Country, with the boys from the Peninsula Team out of Cairns going through the entire carnival undefeated in the Country Division.
The Sunshine Coast boys fought it out in the Metropolitan Division which consisted of three Brisbane teams, Gold Coast, an invitational team and of course the mighty Sunshine Coasters.
In fantastic conditions the Sunny Coast boys were brilliant winning their first three games with ease and were eligible to take on their arch enemy the South Coast side in the Grand Final.
Up until this point the South Coast team had beaten all their opponents by well over 10 goals and were going to be a formidable opposition.
Although Sunny Coast outscored their opponents in the second half, South Coast ran out eventual winners by four goals.
The Sunshine Coast boys were then selected to play the Queensland Country representative side and were far too strong for them in wet and heavy conditions.
The Sunny Coast came away with the ‘Dunlop/Doherty Trophy’ which is played against Met West every championship.
Seven Sunshine Coast boys were selected in the State Squad which compete at the National Championships in Sydney from July 19.
Congratulations to the following boys and best of luck at Nationals: Carter Michael (Stella Maris), Tahj Abberley (St Eugene CC), Corey Lowrie (Banksia Beach), Charlie Bowes (St Thomas More), Saxon Crozier (St Michaels), Jai Chapman (Pacific Lutheran College) and Blake Luland (Immanual Lutheran College).
The awards for the Sunny Coast were:
