The ‘Future Cats’ AFL Program kicked off on March 7 at the Gympie Cats AFC
The ‘Future Cats’ program was a completely free six week Sport Ed AFL participation program for kids in year four to seven in the Gympie region, funded by the Queensland Governments Department of Sport and Recreation
The first two weeks of the program were run in lunch time for children in year’s four to seven at Gympie South, Gympie West, Jones Hill and St Patricks Primary Schools, teaching the skills of AFL football and having a lot of fun along the way.
Starting Friday March 7 and running every Friday night throughout March, the program was run at the Gympie Cats AFL Ground at Six Mile Oval where we have opened the door to all children in the region to be a part of the program, get active and try AFL for FREE.
The first week of the program saw all participants split into age groups, going through rotations learning and practicing the skills of AFL, playing a lot of fun games in between.
Week’s two to four consisted of modified games which saw a girl’s game, as well as some boy’s games with boys in similar year levels playing against each other.
Participant numbers were great, with over 140 children participating in the four schools over the first two weeks.
The aim of the week two to four games was purely to have fun and to let all kids have a kick, the ‘Future Cats’ program aimed to get children outside, actively enjoying AFL with their friends and hopefully enjoying it so much they become Gympie Cats club players in the future."
All participants who have been involved in then program for its duration received a show bag at the end of the program with a variety of AFL goodies.
A grand prize of a Brisbane Lions Jumper awarded to the player that showed the most improvement throughout the whole program.
In all a great program, made possible by the Queensland Government funding and a lot of hard work and support from the schools in the Gympie region.
