The AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors have seen a changing of the guard with an almost completely new Management Committee being elected at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting earlier this week.
The upcoming 2014 season will provide many challenges for incoming president Warren Selvage and his committee of Warren Maher, Jamie Glover, Tom Simpson, Peter Riley, Peter Bax, Ingrid Goff and Peter Southern.
Selvage, however, is no stranger to a challenge, having reformed the North Shore Jets in 2011, coming on board as President and slogging it out, trying to build club participation numbers from the ground up.
A highlight for Selvage no doubt, would be taking the club to its first premiership since its reforming, with the club taking the Under 12 Division 2 title this year.
Six of the remaining committee members in Maher, Glover, Simpson, Riley, Bax and Southern are new to the committee in 2013 and will bring with them a wide array of knowledge, experience and opinion.
The only remaining 2013 Management Committee member is Ingrid Goff who has provided the league with valuable support over a number of years.
While 2013 has been a challenging year, the AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors would certainly not have gotten through as well without the outstanding leadership of outgoing President David Ward.
Ward has lead the AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors for the last two years, after serving on the Management Committee since 2009.
In the time that Ward has lead the organisation, many improvements have been made to the game in the region including increases in participation numbers, flourishing youth girls competitions and a solidified umpiring department.
The AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors also bid farewell to long-serving Management Committee member and Sunshine Coast stalwart Kent Weightman who relocated back to Victoria for family reasons during the year.
Weightman has served on the AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors Management Committee since 2005 and will always be remembered by many for his famous ‘speculate to accumulate’ saying that managed to make its way in to almost every Management Committee meeting.
Gary Vincent, Lionel Lee and Rod Fazackerley have also stepped down from the Management Committee, all having provided valuable support and opinion on AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors matters over a number of years now.
The incoming Management Committee will face many challenges in the coming weeks including the appointment of a new AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors Competition Manager, competition structure for the organisation and further improvements to the umpiring department to name a few, but no doubt under the leadership of Selvage, and the rest of the committee, these challenges will be conquered.
The next AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors major event is the Annual League Conference on Sunday December 1, where representatives from each club, along with Management Committee and various AFL Queensland staff will discuss and formulate plans to overcome the abovementioned challenges.
