While the sun may be harsh on the AFL fields across the Sunshine Coast during the Summer months, Nambour and Hinterland Australian Football Club are using the sun to their advantage- to save!
Through funding made available by the Queensland Government Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation, 18 high-powered solar panels are switched on and powering the Blues club house.
Grants Coordinator, Grant Vayro, applied for the funding after committee and community consultation highlighted solar as an effective and sustainable way for the club to move forward.
“Having solar at the club is something we have had in our strategic plan for some time and it is great to see it come to fruition,” Vayro said.
“Not only will solar save the club valuable money that can be reallocated to player development but it will mean our club is consciously aware of and protecting the surrounding community and environment.”
Among other substantial upgrades at Jubilee Drive, Palmwoods, home of the Blues, solar is another tick in the box as the club strives to be an AFL Green Club and fully self sufficient.
Junior President, Stuart Whitney, has been one of the key drivers towards making their club self sufficient.
“Moving forward it will be important as a community club that we are not only sustaining AFL development on the Coast but that we are actively seeking to minimise our impact on the environment,” Whitney said.
“The cost of becoming a self sufficient club is significant but as we have incorporated the process into our strategic plan and budget that will gradually see the implementation of sustainable resources.”
Having recently obtained Silver Quality Club Accreditation the Nambour and Hinterland Blues are well on their way to having an above standard AFL facility on the Coast.
