TWELVE Coolum State School girls are Sunshine Coast queens of the AFL.
Chelsea Lowrie, Ashlee Gowdy-Strambini, Ella Dawes, Jordan Davies, Allie Gilson, Skye Spaulding, Remi Spaulding, Libby Waddell, Ebony Forbes, Lily Curran, Phoebe Nix and Keely Duggan won the Sunshine Coast Youth Girls Cup at the Fisherman's Rd complex last Thursday.
Playing in windy conditions, the girls reached the grand final after remaining undefeated throughout the day.
Then the weather turned from bad to worse and the final was played in pouring rain. The Coolum girls fought hard to claim victory by just two points against a strong Chevallum State School side.
Coolum coach Michelle Hewison said the team had been training for five weeks leading up to the event.
"Lunchtime drills were a great time all round. The Breakers boys would come for a run with us to practise our bumping skills on, as well as the girls getting the tackle bags out to learn how to hit hard and take an opponent down," Ms Hewison said.
"The girls played with discipline, excitement and real heart. The team comradeship was just beautiful to watch as girls who otherwise don't associate with each other all became one powerful force.
"I am so very proud of the effort the girls have put in and they are definitely deserving winners. That's one we have up on the boys this year."
The girls will now compete in the regional semi-finals, along with the winners of Wide Bay and North Brisbane on June 19.
If they win they go to the Gabba for the state final.
