It is with great delight that the UQ Red Lions announce that four scholarships have been awarded to UQ Students who will play with the Red Lions in the upcoming South East Queensland Division One season. The scholarships are awarded based on ability and character and for 2013 the club was allowed to award up to four scholarships. This is the second season that the scholarships have been awarded and the applications submitted were of a high quality which made the task of selection all the more difficult. All are first year students in 2013.
Below are the scholarship holders for 2013 as well as their chosen course of study, previous school and football team;
- Jordan McDonald – Bachelor of Business Management/Commerce. St Josephs Gregory Terrace. Brisbane Lions Academy.
- Jordan Morrison – Bachelor of health, sport and physical education. The Gap State High School. Mayne AFC.
- Lewis Radford – Bachelor of Arts/Law. Brisbane Grammar School. Brisbane Lions Academy.
- Zac Southern – Bachelor of Physiotherapy. Matthew Flinders Anglican College. Nambour AFC/Brisbane Lions Academy
The scholarships are awarded to players that are studying full time at the University of Queensland and who will register and play with the UQ Red Lions for the season. The scholarship holders will each receive $6,000, which is to be used towards their education, and will receive support services which include entry to the UQ Sport cardio studio/gym/pool/fitness classes/track, athlete workshops as well as free initial strength/conditioning training, physiotherapy, sports psychology with reduced rates on an ongoing basis. Current students or prospective students have until October 2013 to apply for a 2014 scholarship.
The Red Lions are very much looking forward to providing the scholarship holders with a great experience both on and off the field. The club has a good history of developing younger players and with coach Warren Vines and assistant Rod Hughes at the helm for 2013, the club fully expects that young players like the above mentioned will develop their skills and get every opportunity to excel.
