In the Under 12 Division 1 Grand Final day Sunday September 2 at Noosa AFC scheduled for 9am we will witness a battle royal between the Coolum Beach Breakers and the Maroochydore Green Roos for premiership glory.
This game will be played on an SCG type ground with tight confines and players will be tested to not crowd space and their ability to move the ball forward quickly. Great intrigue will centre on which team spots up targets within goal range the best, the small ground should provide for a high scoring game and accuracy is always a key when any “goal shoot out” takes place.
So this season we have seen:
Round 2: Maroochydore Green 14.10.94 def. Coolum Beach 3.7.25
(A wet muddy Friday Night @ Fish Road)
Maroochydore Goals: Cumberland 5, Pratt 4. Best player – Ethan Bidmade.
Coolum Beach Goals: Dickson all 3. Best player - Thomas Griffiths.
Round 10: Maroochydore Green 7.3.45 def. Coolum Beach 5.6.36
(Again Fishermans Rd on a Friday Night – no doubt wet again)
Maroochydore Goals: Pratt 4. Best Players – Travis Manzi, Jesse Johnston.
Coolum Beach Goals: Dickson 2. Best Players – Scott Mano, Jarvis Beitzel.
The big open spaces of the Fish bowl are where the Green Roo has won in their previous encounters this season and no doubt the fish bowl was wet, wet, wet and very muddy on those two occasions. The Breaker boys are more accustomed to feeling the sand between their toes will enjoy Sunday’s conditions better.
Ladder position at end of home and away season:
Second: Coolum Beach (13 wins, 3 losses, 177%)
Third: Maroochydore Green (12 wins, 4 losses, 240%)
Journey to GF
Coolum Beach: experienced a 4 goal win in second semi final over Caloundra
Maroochydore Green: solid win over Maroochydore Gold in first semi final then a hard fought 11 point win over Caloundra in preliminary final.
Will the weeks rest best service the Breakers of Coolum Beach or is it simply a case of best play week in week out in hardened footy contests.
Coaches
Coolum Beach: Lynden Griffiths
Maroochydore Green: Jason Cumberland
Players to watch
Coolum Beach: Tom Ansell, Ben Dickson, Thomas Griffiths, Scott Mano, Jarvis Beitzel
Maroochydore Green: Noah Cumberland, Adam Kerle, Travis Manzi, Jesse Pratt (29 goals)
Coolum Beach’s Tom Ansell came fourth in the 12s div 1 B&F with 19 votes. Tom played for Queensland this season in the schoolboy 12s team, travelling to Adelaide for the National Championships. This commitment would have seen him miss a number of games with training and the game week.
Tom is a key forward target for the Breakers team and has over the course of the season slotted 36 goals. His team mate Ben Dickson has registered 46 goals and with these two key avenues to goal give this Breakers team a strong edge in this area of the game.
On the other hand Maroochydore Green player Noah Cumberland has had a fantastic season, as a first year player he was judged runner-up (29 votes) in the League’s Best and Fairest count this week so he shapes as a potential match winner. Last week he was excellent v Caloundra and in the dying moments lifted his team with some great individual moments of play, he is a key for the Green Roo.
Noah is a proven goal kicker with 41 goals over the season, mainly achieved in a role as an onballer who drifts forward to do so. Adding in the goal kicking stakes for the Roos is Jesse Pratt and both times over season 2102 against the Breakers he has kicked bags of 4 goals.
So all in all I expect this game to be a real arm wrestle and players ability to play the smaller ground will be a telling factor. So get over to the back oval to pick up a large dose of atmosphere with this one.

The Under 12 Division 2 game of Maroochydore Gold v Pomona will be played in the 11am time slot following the division 1 GF. This will allow for the Demons of Pomona to pour out of the hills and watch their two beloved Dees team contest for GF glory, their 14s team kicking off main oval proceedings at 8.45am.
Again we have the same story, a tight field the back 12s field at Noosa that will test the ability of both teams to play constructive footy and continual spot up targets. No room for error through the centre of the ground as any turn overs will be costly as teams repel finding their key forward targets for rebound shots on goal.
As we look at how these two teams have played out in their three season games to date we see that the Pomona Demons won their two home and away encounters, round 2 with ease and then a far tighter contest in round 15 saw a margin of great improvement in 3 goals.
But wait, then there was to be a semi final to be played between these two teams on Demon turf to boot. This time the Golden Roo skipped out of the blocks, bounding to a commanding position that by games end saw a 5 goal win, certainly the Roos demons were there excised.
Round 2: Pomona 18.11.119 def. Maroochydore Gold 2.1.13 @ Pomona
Pomona Goal Kickers: Donnelly 4, Tedford 3, Daddow 2, Broman 2, Hennings 2, McDonough 2, Valamis 2, Jonte Bevan. Best Players: Riley, Daddow, Valamis

Round 15: Pomona 10.5.65 def. Maroochydore Gold 7.5.47 @ Fishermans Rd.
Pomona Goal Kickers: Daddow 3, Giblett 2, Riley 2, Donnelly, Fitzpatrick, McDonough
Best Players: J. Donnelly, J. Carson, Daddow
Maroochydore Gold Goal Kickers: Higginson 2, Whittaker 2, Rentoul, Rohweder, Coles
Best Players: Fuller, Lambert, Whittaker
Semi final: Maroochydore Gold 13.12.90 def. Pomona 8.13.61 @ Pomona
Maroochydore Gold – no info supplied
Pomona Goal Kickers: Riley 3, Daddow 2, Fitzpatrick, Tedford, McDonough
Best Players: Morley, Hennings, McDonough
So what is to become of this re-encounter? I have no doubt that the Demons will come out more invigorated for the challenge, a strong win last week showed that they were smarting from the previous week and their heads focussed on footy. The Gold Roo needs to hang tough early and get this game played on their terms, get some panic amongst the Dees.
Ladder position:
First: Pomona (12 wins, 4 losses, 174%)
Second: Maroochydore Gold (11 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw, 289%)
Journey to GF
Maroochydore Gold: 5 goal win in second semi final over Pomona put them straight into the GF.
Pomona: loss to Maroochydore Gold in second semi, then a 17 goal win over Maroochydore Green in prelim final last week.
Coaches
Maroochydore Gold: Anthony Walsh
Pomona: Anthony McDonough
Players to watch:
Pomona: Louis McDonough, Sam Tedford, Jonte Bevan, Zac Hennings, Tom Daddow, Jack Donnelly
Maroochydore Gold: Joshua Fuller, Joseph Higginson, Jake Edgar, Caleb Wynne, Thomas Whittaker
All in all this will be a cracking game played by two teams of aspiring young AFL stars, so a game well worth keeping in close contact with, to see how it pans out – will be alive to the final minutes.
