Tuesday night saw near on 500 fanatical AFL Sunshine Coast people gather at the University of the Sunshine Coast for the annual League Presentation Night of Nights. It is an evening of vote counting to attain competition Best and Fairest winners and leading goal kickers at each age level, whilst also and as importantly acknowledging the fantastic efforts of key club volunteers and officials.
The night started off with some fine words from League President David Ward who acknowledged the great support the League receives through its key sponsors: Sunshine Coast Radiology, Forty Winks, St Clair Sheetmetal, Love and Partners Chartered Accountants and Choices Maroochydore.
David also recognised our key media partners in Channel 7 Sunshine Coast, Hot91.1FM and the Sunshine Coast Daily. Rounding David’s words out he generously thanked all club committees and their officials and in turn his Management Committee for their wonderful commitment to Junior footy in 2012.
Recognition was also awarded to young Chris Richardson of Maroochydore, a 15 year old who has been involved with the Roos for 9 years. ‘Richo’ is battling Osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer at present and has a lengthy rehabilitation in front of him following leg surgery. For more information and the wish to donate in support of Chris please visit his website www.chris.org.au. United in football, we all wish Chris the best.
For all age groups through our web based program “Footyweb” which acts as the arbitrator we acknowledged the leading goal kickers in each age group.
In 2012 the following players were recognised for their prowess in front of the big sticks. All these players keenly acknowledged the great efforts of those further afield in feeding them the Sherrin.
Under 12 division 1 – Ashley Loughnan (Caloundra), 52 goals
Under 12 division 2 – Kalani Kliese-Walit (Maroochydore Green), 46 goals
The vote count in most competitions was tight with only one good game separating those at the top of the leader’s board.
The vote counting got going in earnest as we kicked off with the under 12 division 2 count with North Shore’s Michael Gerring and Maroochydore Green’s Carter Michael locked in a tight tussle throughout the count. At the end of round 8 we saw both players on 10 votes whilst competition leading goal kicker Kalani was hot on their heels with 8 votes.
Both leading players picked up three votes in round 9 whilst Michael Gerring then backed that up with a pair of twos in his next two games, round 12 saw Carter Michael re-establish contact with a best on ground.
A ‘dry’ round 13 saw no votes gained by our leaders and at the end of round 13 we saw a one vote lead to North Shore’s Gerring over the Roo’s Michael, Kalani still hanging tough in third spot on 12 votes. Eight votes in the last four games saw Gerring well placed but certainly full praise to Roo Michael who rounded his wonderful season out with two Best on Ground performances.
To highlight the value of these two players to their respective teams when the two teams came up against each other in round 16 we saw Carter Michael adjudged BOG and Michael Gerring with the 2 votes by the umpire.
So at counts end the leader board duly listed Michael Gerring with 25 votes and the competitions Best and Fairest and with Carter Michael runner-up on 22 votes. Tied in third spot was Kalani and young Demon, Louis McDonough.

In the Under 12 division 1 vote count we again witnessed an arm wrestle from start to end between Caloundra’s Toara Manango and Maroochydore Green’s Noah Cumberland. After the first four rounds Toara led from Noah by one vote then both were tied on 15 votes apiece after 8 rounds – near two votes per round showed early that both boys were in very good touch and playing very consistent footy for their teams.
Kawana Park youngster Chris Hooper was also playing some fantastic footy to this round 8 point in the season and only just the solitary vote behind our leaders on 14 votes.
As we counted rounds up to round 13 where we would again take stock of the leader board we saw both our leading players setting the pace but this time Toara had a three vote lead over Noah as he sat on 21 in total. Toara over those five games picked up two BOG’s whilst Noah had one stand out game with the umpires three votes awarded.
During this time five other players got their season rolling and placed themselves in solid contention for the award. Kobe Tozer was doing all for his Bulldogs and with Kawana Park’s Chris Hooper sat on 17 votes. One vote back was state 12s schoolboys player Tom Ansell and Tarj Townson of the Golden Roo on 16 votes. Young Tarj had a great five week period picking up 8 votes from four games played. Glasshouse Hinterland’s Marc Kearney also playing some great footy for the Lions stamped his authority on the game.
From that round 14 point on as both their teams built up for finals it was as if these two youngsters then just flicked on their after burners to contest strongly for this award. Noah played four outstanding games picking up 11 of a possible 12 votes this setting a real challenge for Toara who was leading at the completion of round 13. Not to be out done Toara received the Umpires nod for BOG in 3 of these final four games to give him a close 9 votes, enough to get home by 1 vote in a very tight and interesting vote count.
First: Toara Marango (Caloundra) 30 votes
Second: Noah Cumberland (Maroochydore Green) 29 votes
Third: Kobe Tozer (Bribie Island) 22 votes
Fourth:Tom Ansell (Coolum Beach) 19 votes
Fourth: Tarj Townson (Maroochydore Gold) 19 votes
Sixth: Chris Hooper (Kawana Park) 18 votes
Seventh: Marc Kearney (Glasshouse Hinterland) 17 votes
Eighth: Jasper Brain (Noosa Blue) 13 votes
Ninth: Eli Lovell (Gympie) 12 votes
Tenth: Ben Dickson (Coolum Beach) 11 votes
Tenth: Loki Haines (Noosa Red) 11 votes
