The Under 15 School Boy State Championships have recently been completed at Cazalys Stadium in Cairns.
Our Sunshine Coast team of 23 to compete at the championships was chosen from schools within a region that spread from Morayfield to Pomona.
The four day Championship was played in dry conditions, however with a strong 4 goal wind running straight down the middle of the ground.
The Sunshine Coast’s first game was against Met North – last year’s premiers. The boys played a great game, considering it was their first match together; however the final score Met North 9.9.63 def. Sunshine Coast 5.4.34 was mainly due to us not scoring enough in the second quarter with the wind.
The second game was against Wide Bay which also featured three Gympie Cats players. Sunshine Coast played a fantastic game of teamwork moving the ball fast at all times. The final score of Sunshine Coast 16.15.111 to Wide Bay 3.2.20 put us into a game against South Coast to decide the Grand Finalists.
The game against South Coast was a very tough scrappy affair, with the team that won more of the contested ball going to be the eventual winner. South Coast were eventually too strong with final score South Coast 7.7.49 def. Sunshine Coast 2.7.19.
Even though the Sunshine Coast only won one from three games, the two losses were against eventual Grand Finalists.
The team’s efforts of the first 3 games put us in the final day playoff for third spot against Capricornia. Although tired from their three previous games, the Sunshine Coast boys were hungry for a victory and won the day with a solid 10 goal win.
The final ceremony included naming of the Queensland team with 3 of our Sunshine Coast Boys making the team.
Congratulations to Hayden Jeffrey (Caboolture), Ben Glover (Kawana Park) and Daniel Osberger (Glasshouse Hinterland).
