The AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors are excited to launch the first ever Youth Girls AFL competition on the Sunshine Coast.
The competition will officially kick off on Friday April 20 with a season launch at Fishermans Road.
Girls born in 1997, 1998 and 1999 are eligible to participate in the competition.
Caloundra, Kawana Park, Maroochydore, Nambour & Hinterland, Coolum Beach and Noosa will all be part of history as they field a team in the inaugural competition.
The season launch will see the six teams compete in a NAB Cup format consisting of two pools of three teams with games played over two hours.
AFL Sunshine Coast Club Development Officer Paul Tresise is excited with the prospect of the new competition.
“We’ve made a big push over the past couple of years and have put a lot of resources into getting the youth girls concept and competition off the ground,” Paul said.
“There has been a lot of support from Clubs to really get this competition in motion and it is with their guidance that this has all been made possible.
“Chris Hunt, the former AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors President and Julia Price at AFL Queensland have also been key drivers of the launch of this competition and we look forward to producing some exceptional Youth Girls talent to represent the region and show the rest of Queensland the skills that the Coast girls have to offer.”
The Mountain Creek SHS Senior team just last week won the South East Queensland Youth Girls cup title, further demonstrating the great talent pool on the Sunshine Coast.
After the season launch, the competition will then progress to home and away fixtures played on either Friday nights or Sundays at the club home grounds.
As the season approaches, all clubs have set aside specific training times for their Youth Girls teams:
- Caloundra: Fridays at 4.30pm
- Coolum Beach: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4.00pm
- Kawana Park: Thursdays at 5.00pm
- Maroochydore: Mondays and Wednesdays at 5.00pm
