Palmwoods AFL Auskick has taken AFLQ Trainee Brad Nunn by storm this year with impressive rounds of Mad Eagle and their love for playing AFL.
“This Auskick is one of the best after school Auskick’s I have ever run because the kids are awesome to be around and the parents are always willing to lend a hand for activities” Nunn said.
“The kids are so respectful, love learning and playing the game whether it is skill based games or bomb the parents they are always eager to get involved and improve their skills.”
Of the participants there are four kids from the one family who have recently moved to the region from Ireland.
This proved interesting a few weeks at Auskick when the Irish dominated the Aussies in both of the International Rules Tests.
The Hennessy’s love coming down and experiencing AFL with the oldest Mairin, taking honours as the best ever Mad Eagle contestant on the Sunshine Coast.
“We have never been able to send Mairin back to the start and we have tried everything from myself and Dayne (Frew) rapping, dancing, making weird noises, having bizarre conversations and even after being bitten by a march fly that drew blood she did not flinch,” Nunn said.
Sunshine Coast Development Officer, Dayne Frew also speaks of the courageous acts of Mairin.
“It really is unbelievable, she doesn’t move at all... sometimes it is almost like she isn’t even breathing,” Frew said.
Another family name worth an honourable mention is the Lenton’s.
The two Lenton boys have a massive family rivalry going on which sees the brother’s highly competitive nature shine through as they try to be the best kickers or the fastest and strongest of the group.
It could also be said that the illustrious Brad Nunn has a favourite, every Thursday afternoon he travels to Palmwoods State School a little more enthusiastically than any other centre because of Finn Trentepohl- a passionate Bombers supporter.
“Finn is an absolute champ...he is a gun footballer and obviously the best thing is, of course, he is an Essendon supporter,” Nunn said.
“There are heaps of kids that are little ‘guns’ including Luther, Jacko, Tommy and Josh who all have a crack every week and love Mad Eagle as well.”
NAB AFL Auskick is alive and well on the Sunshine Coast and with positive participants like this at Palmwoods it is encouraging for Club footy in 2012.
