The students at Kin Kin State School have been treated to AFL delight over the last six weeks under the watchful eye of Principal Trent Shaw and AFLQ employee extraordinaire Alistair Baker.
Through a Sport Education program the year four to seven students were actively involved in learning the skills of AFL and appreciating the importance of team work.
Alistair Baker said that the majority of the students had never played AFL before so it was rewarding to see the kids be able to correctly dispose the footy by week six.
“We had around 30 students with probably an even split of boys and girls which is always heaps of fun especially when they are all so eager to learn,” Baker said.
“It was so much fun every Thursday morning and having Trent (Shaw- Principal) help out made conducting the program that little bit less stressful and more engaging for the students.”
As week six approached the students were split into three teams to face off in the final week of grand final competition.
The three teams showed up on the final session with team posters, well rehearsed team chants and massive amounts of energy to contest the round robin grand final series.
Team Rocket, Team Rocket we are the best, come on now let’s beat the rest, reach for the light, leap to the sky.
Team Rocket, Team Rocket- do or die TEAM ROCKET.
Students were given a stop watch, score cards, water bottle and goal flags to facilitate each game as one team were responsible while the other two teams played each other.
Showing an enormous amount of responsibility the students officiated each game with field umpire Alistair Baker taking care of the whistling duties.
Team Magikarp, Team Rocket and Team Magmar (all Pokémon characters) played some fantastic football with their hearts on their sleeves and in true Kin Kin style- small in size, big in spirit.
It all came down to Team Magikarp taking on Team Rocket in the much anticipated grand final.
In picture perfect conditions Team Magikarp were first off the mark conceding four behinds by the break to be leading Team Rocket 4-2 at the break.
Team Rocket flew out of the blocks after the break booting a sensational goal to be up by four early in the half.
Team Magikarp hit back with their first major and another two points to take out the game 1.6.12 to 1.3.9.
The winning Team Magikarp played a sensational game of footy and now has school bragging rights as the best AFL team.
Congratulations to Trent Shaw, Kin Kin State School, Alistair Baker and AFLQ for facilitating such a successful Sport Education Program.
