By the time of the under 16’s counts the crowd had thinned but the excitement and action was still at mega bubbling point with the division 2 competition first to be scrutinized.
Leading Goal kicker was between two players over the later part of the season with Glasshouse Hinterland’s Mitchell Fraser and Gympie Catter Samuel Stubbs the two challenging. The later Mitch was the eventual key forward and with 63 goals he was a real focal point and will be again this Sunday in the Lions attempt to grab the premiership. Mitch’s big day out was in round 18 when he snared 11 majors and with Gympie having the bye that round he zoomed past Stubbsy of the Cats who had to just sit and watch.
The Lions opposition this week is the Kawana Park Eagles and from the goal tally board something that jumps out at you is the efforts of the two big Eagle forwards in Kethro and Boothey with 47 and 45 goals apiece – many would say this is the key to success.

Of special outcome here was the joint tie for the runner up award with two Gympie Cats players in Jack Clouston and Reimarley O’Donoghue both on 20 votes. Their voting to a large degree having some serious similarity, Jack voted in 10 games and 9 games for Reimarley with 5 BOG’s.
The winner was Christian Thavenot with 36 votes, a very big tally in any circumstances over 18 rounds. Over 15 rounds Christian gained votes from the men in orange and eight times was given the big 3er, his consistency was awesome and he will feature as a real key player in Sunday’s GF.
Jonah Bryant was Glasshouse Hinterland’s highest vote getter and he finished in fourth place with 18 votes, four 3 votes amongst his eight vote getting games. Jonah along with this competition’s leading goal kicker Mitch Fraser and the likes of Lindsay Bowler and Alex Robertson will be keys the other way for the Lions in this GF.
Ex Gympie player and this year a Demon to the cause Harry White capped off a great season for Pomona in the under 16 division 1 competition, our premier competition, with 58 goals. Harry was a clear winner by 21 goals from Demon team mate Brad Forbes.

In looking at Harry’s goal kicking chart the clear indication is how consistent a performer he was, only one game seeing him not trouble the goal umpires – way back in round 2. On seven occasions he scored bags of four or five goals as a key focal point for the Pomona Demons and if H didn’t get you, Forbsey would.

Caloundra’s Elliot Escott-Kenny was awarded the major gong of the night with the under 16’s division 1 Best and Fairest for season 2011. Elliot was a clear winner from Pomona Demon Alex Mahony who polled 18 votes to gain a much deserved runner up trophy.
Elliot polled in 10 rounds having 6 votes on the board at the back end of round two this along with Maroochydore Roos player Cameron Stevenson was a great start to their season (Cam coming in equal third with club mate Jacob Chapman on 17 votes). After a few slower weeks for Elliot between rounds 4 and 7 he then found some season consistency to gather votes every second week to be a regular player for the Panthers.
Second placed Alex Mahony will be well pleased with his season as his proud, glowing mum stated later that night. In eight games he was recognised by the umpires as a prime contributor in his game of footy. Rounds 6 to 10 saw votes to Alex of 3, 2, 3, 1, 3 which really got his Demons firing as they took the competition before them.
All in all our under 16 footy in season 2011 has been two fantastic competitions and for all players involved well done and thanks for setting a high standard of play and sportsmanship. A number of our 16’s players, 143 in total leave our Junior competition this year and we thank them for their contribution, wish you the best going forward and do hope that you will continue to support AFL through play or cheer in the years to come.
So now we look to Sunday 4th September @ Maroochydore JAFC Fishermans Road for a feast of footy action – that one day in September!
