The Suncoast Power’s first campaign for 2011 will be on in earnest with the Under 16 group anxious for a good result in the upcoming AFL Queensland State Under 16 Championships. All games will be held at Zillmere in Brisbane’s north with the Suncoast Power to tackle the local side the Northern Raiders on Thursday April 28.
At the time of this article the squad stands at 26 players with one unlucky player still to miss out on the final 25.
Overall the Power’s preparation has been very good despite the rain playing havoc with training grounds and a couple of injuries. 25 players will be named with 23 to play each of the three games.
While only able to play one practice match all signs have been positive with a victory over the Western Taipans in Brisbane last week. The greatest attribute the group has had is the willingness to push each other on and support each other to achieve quality training sessions and results. Hopefully this will translate to the championships. The hardest part of the process is the decision on the final 25 with at least 7 other players who will be able to consider themselves unlucky to miss out on the final squad.
Coaches Kent Weightman, Darren Carlson and Trevor Mitchell have done a superb job in educating and honing the skills and game play of the boys while Nick Devereux and Keith Hicks have kept the boys fit and healthy as best they have been able to.
So it is with great optimism and (for the first time in a few Power 16’s sides of recent memory) height that we go into the championships with a group seriously capable of influencing the outcome of the championships.
