Nine Gympie primary schools and over 1000 students have given Australian Rules Football a go in the last few weeks.
Gympie Cats AFL Club’s Rob Kelly teamed up with Mal Pearson from AFL Sunshine Coast to run clinics at local primary schools.
Kelly described the clinics as a great success.
“The clinics were designed to encourage children to participate in active recreation,” he said.
While emphasis was on having fun and being active, the clinics were also geared towards encouraging children to sign up for the Gympie Cats’ new season.
“We would love to see the clinics convert to players signing up,” Kelly said.
“If, through the clinics, they develop an interest in Australian Rules Football, we’d love to have them running around in the Friday Cool Cats competition.”
The Cool Cats competition is a big success story, played at the Six Mile Oval each Friday afternoon between 4-5pm.
This year, the competition has been expanded to separate Under 8 and 10 competitions.
Meanwhile, Lynda and Craig Campbell from Campbell’s Tuck and Bobcat have teamed up with the Gympie Cats AFL Club this season, ensuring every player registering with the Cool Cats receives their own footy.
“The sponsorship from Campbells adds to the local support the competition already receives,” Kelly said.
