On Saturday September 11 the AFL Sunshine Coast Umpires Association held their awards night at the Maroochy RSL Club. The night went well as everyone enjoyed the quieter surroundings to chat instead of preparing for game day. I would like to thank all of the umpires for their efforts this year and look forward to seeing you all again in 2011.

The “Golden Whistle” is the top award presented to the Umpire considered the ultimate on-ground performer, driven by a dedication to become the ‘Best Overall’. This person demonstrates in outstanding fashion, all the skills, knowledge and craftsmanship required for football at the highest level. Matt Dent took out this prestigious award for 2010.
Representative umpiring has also been high on priorities with Laura Harris & Tyler Higson going to Bundaberg for the U15 State Secondary School Championships, whilst Sheldon Judd went to Cairns for the Northern U14 Country Championships. Nathan Gibson, Nathan Scott, Sheldon Judd, Billy Bryant, Adam Randall, Shaun White & Rohan Briggs all officiated at the South U14 Country Championships and Sheldon & Nathan Gibson then went on to represent the Sunshine Coast at the U14 State Championships held here at Fisherman’s Rd in June. We also had help in boundary and goal from numerous umpires we have on the Coast. At the U15 National Championships in Perth, Tyler Higson was our sole representative.
The next step up for aspiring umpires are Development squads. We have four umpires currently in them, Sheldon Judd, Tyler Higson, Nathan & Brad Scott. The latter three on this list umpire senior football and have been selected for various grand finals in all age groups.
Well done to all the award winners and representative umpires. We hope you have a long and successful career in umpiring.
