Chevallum SS suffered a heartbreaking loss in their bid to be crowned Queensland State Champions in the Future Stars Cup.
At Coorpooroo with the Brisbane Lions squad looking on the Chevallum SS year 5,6 and 7 AFL team played outstanding football and were unlucky to go down to the Brisbane West side Yeronga SS. With scores level at halftime the Yeronga side got on top in the third quarter and with the aid of a strong breeze kicked what appeared to be a match winning lead. Undaunted by the task, the Sunny Coasters surged into the forward line countless times and were unfortunately still four points behind when the siren sounded. Final scores, Yeronga 5.1.31 to Chevallum 4.3.27. Best players for Chevallum were Courey Hubscher-Anzini, Andrew Davis and Aaron Channing.
Despite the loss, Coach Allen Eade was upbeat and with third place still up for grabs he urged the boys to lift for the third and fourth playoff match against the Far North Queensland School St Andrews. The team responded well to the words of wisdom and attacked the ball in numbers paving the way for big Courey to run and carry the ball. Chevallum kicked away to a comfortable lead with young Oliver Trigg bagging a couple of goals. The final score was Chevallum 6.6.42 to St Andrews 2.2.14. Best players, Corey, Paddy, Alex, Riley, Fraser, Ollie and Alexandria.
Brisbane South side Springwood SS defeated Yeronga SS by four points in the Grand Final.
The tiny school nestled amongst strawberry farms was delighted with the efforts of their side to get to the final stage of the competition, however a clash of dates nearly resulted in all the training and hard work going to waste. The date set down by AFLQ for the finals was right in the middle of the Yr 6/7 camp to Canberra that parents had been paying off since late 2009. Unperturbed by this problem, Principal Lynn Winch declared that the students would not miss this opportunity to proudly represent the school and organised for the students to fly from Canberra to Brisbane and back to Canberra to have the best of both worlds. The students now have a greater understanding of what an AFL player goes through when they are scheduled to play an interstate game.
With all the excitement over the school will now be raising funds via raffles and auctions to pay for the flights and transfers. Thanks to the generosity of the Brisbane Lions the school now has a number of excellent pieces of sports memorabilia to help their cause.
