Sunshine Coast teams Mountain Creek SHS and Chevallum SS travelled to Bundaberg to take on the regional winners from Wide Bay (WB) and Capricornia (Cap) on Wednesday 16th June.
Mountain Creek competrf in the Northern States Cup and had no trouble accounting for Xavier Catholic College (WB) 15.7.97 to 2.3.15 and then backing up to defeat Rockhampton SHS (Cap) 14.5.89 to 1.0.6.
Coach Mitch Hyde was pleased with the even team performance and contributions from players from a non AFL background. Mountain Creek now advance to the semi finals to be held in Brisbane.
At a separate venue Chevallum SS had a battle on their hands when they came up against a talented Moore Park SS (WB) and found themselves in trouble when trailing by two goals late in the game. Moore Park had thrown everything they had at Chevallum and could have led by more if not for the work of Andy Davis at fullback and Frazer Johnson getting involved in everything. Courey Hubscher-Anzini lifted and continued to propel the ball into the forward line resulting in a quick goal to give the Sunny Coasters a glimmer of hope.
Coach Scott Barr was hoping for a miracle when he moved Patrick Chancellor (Paddy) from defence into attack with only seconds left in the game and behind by six points. A strong chest mark from Chancellor drew applause from the Chevallum cheer squad which was then drowned out by the final siren. The opportunity to kick a goal after the siren doesn’t come around too often and despite being 25 metres out and 3metres in from the boundary, young Paddy calmly slotted through the goal much to the disbelief of the Moore Park faithful.
With no time to celebrate the, Chevallum side took the field against St Francis Catholic Primary (Cap) who had earlier gone down to Moore Park 44 to 8. The equation for Chevallum was to win by 37 points or more to advance to the next stage of the competition. Courey Hubscher-Anzini took control of the match and provided countless attacking raids through his running, long kicking and monster hitouts.
Alexandria Psarros was on the end of most of those kicks and her speed and endurance was telling as she set up goals at will. The younger Chevallum players came into the game with Ethan Hamer and Liam Everson increasing the lead to the desired six goals plus. The last quarter was one way traffic as Alex Burns denied St Francis with some strong marking and running off half back and with goals to Psarros and another to Hamer the match was over. Final scores Chevallum 12.7.79 to St Francis 2.2.14.
Chevallum now go through to the semi finals in Brisbane and if successful, the Grand Final to be played at the Gabba.
