We have a long weekend in front of us, and no doubt all will appreciate the holiday on Monday and for some they will get to kick the Sherrin on Friday evening then have plenty of days of recuperation.
The under 8’s and 10’s doing their stuff on Friday evening at venues Caloundra, Noosa and North Shore (real footy on them soccer grounds!). To follow these young ones on Friday evening at the North Shore “runway” will be a division 3 under 12 game of the hosts v Maroochydore and judging by how this level of footy is going all games are well contested with players developing their skills and game sense. Whilst Nambour and Glasshouse Hinterland venues will host a couple of youth games under lights.
At Nambour & Hinterland’s the “woods” we have a 12’s div two game of the Blue Blues v Kawana Park Blue Eagles – hopefully that is the only blue! Both teams will be looking to bounce back to the winners circle this game after losses last start, the Blues of Nambour & Hinterland only going down to top team Pomona by two kicks, whilst Kawana Park Blue found the going tough against a resurgent Glasshouse Hinterland team after being belted the previous round by Pomona.
To follow this game will be an under 16’s clash with the local Blues team taking on the Panthers of Caloundra. This match has teams from either end of the ladder but a closer game it will be than that on the Blues dung hill, could be a get down and muddy affair at the southern end of the paddock. The Blues were most disappointing last start against a very slick Maroochydore team whom only sit percentage behind Caloundra. Whereas the Panthers last start, simply went about their business against the Noosa Gold Tigers.
To the south, the “Jungle” of Glasshouse Hinterland will light up with the visit of the other Nambour & Hinterland 12’s division 2 team of “White Blues”. The hot and cold Glasshouse Hinterland under 12 team were very good last start against Kawana Park Blue but they do need to find some much needed consistency to develop confidence to rebound next game against the top team who seem to have their measure. The White Blue’s had an 18 point win against the Maroochydore team under lights last week at the woods, so perhaps they are night owls and again given night lighting will soar?
The Glasshouse Hinterland 14’s will follow at 7.15pm with a game against Maroochydore Green, the Green Roo has found the going tough to date but a good first half against Gympie last start should be where they build from. Glasshouse Hinterland are top team and will take some stopping, but all to play for and nothing to lose Roos.
Sunday morning Maroochy RSL Club AFL Sunshine Coast Junior footy sees games played from Caloundra to Gympie with many other ports of call in between, Kawana Waters College, Coolum State High, Weyba Road and Pomona’s Den.
The “North Street” Caloundra Panthers have a huge day of under 12 and 14 footy action, the clubs three under 12 and two under 14 teams are at home – the final siren sounding on the day sometime close to 4pm.
The club hosts Noosa Gold in the 12’s div 3, with Maroochydore travelling for the second game and finally in the major div 1 game it is the Cats of Gympie on southern turf. This under 12 game is most important to the structuring of the final four – three teams currently outside the four are breathing down the Cats neck. But this will be no easy game for the Cats who are only one game off second spot but they play a Panthers team who last week went within 3 points of knocking over the undefeated team to date of Maroochydore Green, so the North Street footy fans are in for some great footy with this 11.30am game.
In the 14’s games at North Street we see Caloundra Panthers play Nambour & Hinterland whilst the Power of Caloundra play Maroochydore Roos. The Panthers team last week beat the Roos by 19 points and it will be interesting to see if in back to back weeks Caloundra can put the Roo in the stew again through their Power team. Many footballers who this week have been named to represent the Sunshine Coast under 14’s in the upcoming State Championships will be on display, and outside of this group many others who went close to also securing representative jumpers will be out to take the shine off a few on the current inside.
Up the Bruce we see two games at the home of the Gympie Cats “Cattery”, so who is purring up the highway to visit these Cats? Nambour & Hinterland in an under 12 div 3 game whilst North Shore Jets zoom in for a 16’s tussle.
Last time these 16’s met at the runway North Shore won the day against a Gympie team light on for players due to some Wide Bay commitments so this time expect this game to be a tighter contest. Last start for the Jets 16’s they took on Maroochydore at the Fish Bowl in a game that was of good quality from start to finish and came down to a tense last 5 minutes with a deadlock in scores broken with a last minute scrambled point from the Jets – a real Hollywood type block buster it was! The cats soundly beaten last start by ladder leader Glasshouse Hinterland will be looking for redemption and with full numbers and commitment should do well.
This actually is a huge under 16 game, the Jets one game clear of the Cats in the all important fourth spot and a win their way will make life most difficult for the Cats over the closing seven rounds to purr into finals contention.
Possibly some of the Cats 14’s boys will be looking to back up in their clubs 16’s but to do so they will have to fly out of the “Pomona Den” following their 14’s tussle with the Demons at 9am to get back for a 16’s kick off at 10.45am.
These Gympie Cats are hot and cold and really its time now to discover some consistency for coach Glenn, they are capable and must look to share the work load a lot more – just don’t leave it all to the big fella Jack.
The Pomona 16’s look at this point to be the team to challenge top spot Lions of Glasshouse Hinterland who have the bye this start and again they will see some of their 14’s back up to help out their big brothers. The Billy boiling from the canteen should offer plenty of heat for the spectators on what will be a cool Sunday morning in mountain country. Maroochydore 16’s to be the visitor to this 16’s game, and very good they were last start and no doubt coach Bruce will be looking for the same energies come Sunday to get momentum going again after the agonizing one point loss last start to them Jets.
Noosa at “Weyba Road” the home of the Tigers where their senior team is travelling so well have four games of junior footy to host on Sunday in the Maroochy RSL Club AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors.
Under 12’s div 2 Tigers of Red v Pomona Demons will be a good game come 9am, these Pomona Demons for such a young team with many new AFL faces are taking all before them, although a few Friday nights back the Lions of Glasshouse Hinterland gave them a touch up.
North Shore travel to Noosa to play the locals div 2 14’s team of Gold, the Jets are still looking to open their season account and possibly this weekend may be it with the snow season opening down south and a long weekend perhaps some may jet to the fields of white?
Noosa v Maroochydore at any time any level anywhere is always a game of great interest, a question often asked by the Tiger is “who put the Roo in the Stew?” Both teams had good wins last week and the question is being asked; has the White Roo finally found that winning formula? This will be very good game the “M.O.T.R” and for the white Roo a win is a must if they are to get back into contention for finals as time is now their nemesis, currently being two games out.
The final game on this four bout card at Weyba Road is the under 16 division 1 clash of Noosa Blue v Maroochydore set for 1pm. The Maroochydore 16’s are a formidable outfit with a solid game plan – the Tigers will be looking to put the Roo in the stew as they do!
At “Coolum State High” the Breakers will be locking horns with a couple of Maroochydore teams, 12’s div 1 the Green Roo and 14’s div 2 a Gold Roo.
This Green 12’s Roo is playing fantastic footy and certainly have stamped themselves as the team to beat, so that in its self is reason enough for the Coolum boys to break their season party down. The Breakers have certainly accepted a greater challenge from round four stepping up to this A grade level of footy whilst the going has been tough at times we do hope that a solid and positive Breakers spirit is developing with such weekly challenges.
The 14’s div 2 Breakers team is having a good season under the tunes of Pete Murray, and many weeks they break out into song with a win. This week the Golden Roo will plan to cease that sing along and find reason to hop with joy, capable of doing their own song rendition.
Finally also on school grounds, a long weekend and time spent at school doesn’t sound great but when you have reason for the best subject “AFL” why not hit the “Eagles Nest”, doing the Eagle Rock?
Gold play Blue in the form of Eagles v Tigers in a 12’s div 1 contest of great importance with a 10am start, following on from the local clubs fantastic “in season” Auskick program. Both teams having wins last start putting them both within grasping distance of the top four, so with the season slipping away this is a most important game, a game that will put a gap between the pair.
And to follow is a Golden Tiger also of Noosa to take on the Eagles of Kawana Park. These Eagles kicking a cricket score last week with 12 players listed in the goal kickers and general well spread indicating many avenues to the big sticks.
So with no senior footy happening this weekend it is time to just head off to watch the up and coming talent, chill back and enjoy and applaud the efforts of all, from the match day team officials to the umpires and finally the players who are all learning their junior AFL trade.
Enjoy the long weekend, enjoy the footy!
