The AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors are pleased to announce the scheduling of the 2009 Maroochy RSL Club Final Series that will see the culmination of another great season of Junior AFL action on the coast.
Following the annual Finals Tendering process that is put out to all clubs for their consideration, the Leagues Management Committee has weighed up the best options as presented and made due consideration in the best interests of show casing the game.
A few venues in 2009 were unavailable to host finals footy, notably Nambour & Hinterland AFC who is an annual contributor to our finals series. The “Woods” field is in line for some solid post season renovations following another horrific season of saturated grounds and heavy demand player traffic, in the last 12 months this field has gone under water no less than 4 times.
With the bulk of the tender applications coming from Pomona, Noosa and Glasshouse Hinterland it is no wonder that these are the venues that will bring us our finals fix in 2009. The hosting of the eagerly awaited end of season LMP carnival will again be at Noosa and based on their history with this event, another great day on Sunday 16th August will be assured for the 8’s and 10’s.
With two playing pools being the structure of our under 16’s competition in 2009, we see a final five as the starting structure, the side finishing “top” in Pool B given opportunity to compete in an Elimination Final against the fourth placed Pool A team. And teams two and three of Pool A playing a Qualifying Final for the right to challenge the top placed side a week later in a semi final. At this point barring some big form reversals, the Elimination Final appears to be Maroochydore (Pool A fourth spot) v Noosa Red (Pool B top spot) whilst the Qualifying Final will see Kawana Park and Caloundra do battle, either at this point could finish in Pool A spots two or three. These two games will be played at Glasshouse Hinterland with the Management Committee’s preferred option being Friday night action – 14th August.
With the first year of division 3 under 12 action nearing completion, it was thought that a participation round robin carnival would be a great way to finish off the season for this group, so Sunday 23rd August will see Noosa’s Weyba Road showcase this development phase of football. The format to this round robin carnival needs finalisation but it is thought a 3 or 4 game lightning hit out amongst the 6 teams would be suitable.
Semi Final action as is normally the case will see two venues come into play being Pomona AFC’s “Den” and Glasshouse Hinterland AFC’s “Jungle”. With 10 games to play, utilisation of the Glasshouse Hinterland Lions lights will take place on the Friday night for two games leaving four at each venue on the Sunday, spread of games will depend on the makeup of the Semi Finals teams.
The five Preliminary Finals will be back at Noosa as they were last year, with at least the under 12’s division 2 Final on the back oval, as a five game match scheduling on one field makes for too long of a day.
And then there is the Grand Finals, unfortunately at this point we are not in a position to finalise the venue as the Management Committee continues to work through a few logistical questions. One thing is for sure – the date will be Sunday 6th September.
So as we head to the business end of the season we acknowledge the efforts of all teams and players in contributing to the quality of play as seen throughout season 2009 of the Maroochy RSL Club AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors youth footy.
