The Maroochy RSL Club AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors welcomed back the under 8s and 10s last Sunday with the annual season opening carnival at Nambour & Hinterland AFC played under bright Queensland skies.
Footy in our competition Youth levels was played in general with strong spirit and keenness for the contest, the Sherrin is the keenly sought object and its a shame theres only one out on the field of play.
In the 12s division 1 we see three teams with three straight wins to their names, the leaders in this comp are Maroochydore Roos, Nambour & Hinterland and Noosa Blue. The second Maroochydore team of Green registered their first win after having the lengthy 9.00am road trip to Gympie, this game was a tight tussle as the Cats on home turf are starting to get menacing. This competition continues to provide all with much intrigue as we look at how well the hinterland team of Nambour is travelling early season, strength is needed in these clubs outside of the big three, Go Blues!
The 12s division 2 sees the Breakers of Coolum Beach as the pace setters now with three wins and they gathered another all important win on Sunday at Kawana Waters State College against the previously undefeated Eagles. This is great for the development of AFL in Coolum, well done coach ODwyer. Maroochydore White also continue to flex their muscle at this level and posted their third straight win, this time over old enemy Caloundra who this Sunday will hope to open their account against Pomona. But now we have a Pomona combination that has been steadily built in recent weeks coming together well, resulting in their first win Sunday against Noosa Red and a solid win it was.
In the division 3 of 12s we have four teams going around all now having posted a win, following Nambour & Hinterland getting home by 4 points on carnival day. This competition is very much geared toward first year 12 players, some advanced under 10 players and those inexperienced 12s who may have just taken to our great game, all played in the vision of development. We wont be playing for premierships just simply giving the participants another step in their pathways, enjoy!
In the under 14s we have two competitions that are on simmer and ready to boil to high levels. This is an age level where we very much need to get strong weekly competition going, players need to be challenged at a comparative level whilst teams are graded accordingly. In the 14s div 1 we see Noosa Blue as the yard stick with a hovering Maroochydore Gold on the same points but percentage is huge to Noosas advantage. Kawana Park Eagles suffered their first loss for the season against this Gold Roo and sizable the loss, these Eagles looked very good last week with plenty of run and carry through the lines but Sunday that Eagle verve and rock was missing. The Hinterland teams of Glasshouse and Nambour are trying well as they both search for their first season win. Nambour did get to share the points last week in a draw with Maroochydore Green, this draw has pushed the Green Roo hard in their contest against Pomona with lasts weeks sour taste of a draw getting them the points this round over a tenacious Demon crew.
Caloundra 14s division two t eam are the pace setters in their competition and boast a percentage seldom seen (1920.00); they have only conceded fifteen points 3 games. The Breakers of Coolum Beach havent as yet got the chocolates but under coaches Boyd and the great Don Smith are beginning to blend in their first real year at this level, two of their three games have been most competitive. The Coolum Beach ground is in fantastic condition, this ground at the local High School is a fantastic plus for the games development in this cosy beach side town. Coming games will give us good indication where this competition is at.
In the under 16s we look to round 8 when we will split the team numbers into two pools, these will present us with our vision of creating more even match play week in week out but in the meantime the luck of the draw goes on. Sundays 16s thriller was at the Woods with Nambour & Hinterland coughing up the points after holding sway for much of the game against a committed Noosa Red outfit. But the Tigers were certainly wayward in front of goal, having 32 scoring shots for only 11 majors. Caloundra provided us all with a timely reminder that they will be a strong team in 2009 under the stewardship of coach Lumpy, the Panthers accounted comfortably for Maroochydore last Friday night and appear to be back on track after dropping to our current ladder leader in Kawana back in round one. Noosa Blue also sit undefeated and two date have had comfortable wins in all outings, this weeks encounter with Caloundra at Weyba Road (Sunday 10.20am) will be a beauty giving clear indication where some things in our junior 16s footy are pointing in 09.
