Newsletter from the President - 'Welcome to Warriors Basketball January 2011'

Congratulations to Karen Winter, our Senior Women’ Coach, and partner
the beaming Luke Smith, on the birth of their first child - a sweet little girl
named Grace (7lbs 13 ounces) in the very early hours of Monday morning,
24th January!! Both mother and child are doing well. Another little Warrior in
the making. We hope that Grace brings you much joy and not too many
sleepless nights.
We also welcome and congratulate Al Green as our new Senior Men’s
Coach for 2011. Al will need no introduction to most of you, as his stellar
career in the ‘36ers was the stuff of legend. He has continued post NBL to be
heavily involved in basketball here in South Australia with coaching and his
famous basketball camps. Al will be also coaching the Men’s Youth League
next season and will be supervising the Junior Boys Program. So you will be
seeing a lot of him in the coming year. Al will no doubt attract a lot of new
players to the club which is a good thing for everyone. Once again – Welcome
Al.
Quiz Night – Saturday the 26th February, 2011. Commencing at 6.30 pm for a
7.00 pm start. Bring your own supper and drinks can be bought at the bar.
This was a great success last year and we look forward to another fun night
this year. Further details such as the price of tickets and how to get them will
be finalised this week and will be published next week. Lots of prizes will be
available, so put on your thinking caps and come and support our great club.
This is one of our major fundraisers of the year and it is also a very happy
social event where we can get to know so many more good people. Table
sizes will be 8 to 10 people, so start organising your party now.
Management has decided to donate $500 to the Flood Appeal Fund. While
money in the club remains very tight it was agreed that part of being a
responsible and responsive community organisation entailed reaching out to
the wider Australian community. There is no need to detail the horrors of the
QLD floods – the media has clearly demonstrated that in the footage and
stories published, but also recovery from the widespread devastation in NSW
and Victoria need a response from all Australians. These are the times that
we pull together and we teach our children that caring for others is an
important part of our Australian way of life.
Fund Raising Committee – We are delighted to announce that our wonderful
sub-committee has met their December target of raising $2000 through the
BBQ/Cake stall at the Christmas Carnival, the Christmas Raffle and the BBQ
at Bunnings Port Road Woodville. Well done to all of you!! There is no target
for this month obviously, but a similar total will be set for February. Let’s aim
to exceed it in a big way!!
Fees – There has been a very good response to the payment of fees this
summer season and we thank you all for being so prompt. This week alone
we have paid out $12,000 for court hire (for part of 2010) and registrations
and we rely on fees almost entirely to pay our bills. To the few who have not
got around to paying your fees could you please do so ASAP. If you are in
financial difficulty, not an unusual situation in this day and age, please contact
the office on 8268 9450 or Lynne Holland (Lynne.Holland@mua.org.au ) to
sort out a payment schedule that you can manage. We do not want children to
miss out on playing our great game simply because of money.
Sub-Committee Volunteers – Once again we appeal to you all to volunteer
for one of the sub-committees. These include the Finance and Administration;
the Basketball Committee; the Marketing and Finance Committee. The last
one is where we particularly need more volunteers. We have a very small
band of wonderful workers but it is simply not fair to continue to ask them to
do so much. An hour or two on average, once a month is all that is required to
spread the load and believe me, it can be very satisfying and actually good
fun! The Aussie spirit can extend to WDBC.
Well that about covers it. I hope that this newsletter finds you all fit and well
and recovered from the Festive Season. Good luck to you all for 2011.
Go Warriors, Helen Gleeson, President WDBC
