Newsletter from the President - 15/9/2010

Hi Everyone

Well the finals are over for another year and everyone can now take a well earned rest. Three of our teams made it to the Grand Finals with the Div 5 Men taking out the top honours with a 20 point beating of archrivals the Bearcats. Wayne Devlin’s team of mighty Warriors were a sight to behold and it gave me much pleasure to present them with their championship medals. Well done guys.

Our Div 1 and Div 2 U21 Girls also made it to the Grand Final and acquitted themselves very well. The Div 1’s played with poise, flair, grit and great spirit in a fiercely contested and tight game. It was a credit to them that despite going down by 1 point to Norwood, they maintained good grace in difficult circumstances. I was proud of you all.

The following night saw the Div 2 Girls take on Central Districts at Pasadena. This was at times a brutal encounter but our girls met the challenges thrown at them head on. Despite being beaten convincingly it should be noted that Centrals chose to put their best team, including ABA players, in the Div 2 competition.  Once again, well done girls! We hope to see all of you in the inaugural Summer Season of the U23 Youth League.

Our thanks to Brooke Gathercole for coaching both teams. A big effort.

On that note we wish Brooke well as she leaves for her assault on the Kokoda Trail. That takes true grit. We also wish to congratulate her on her upcoming marriage. Quite a busy few months for our Brooke.

To the other teams who played last week in their Preliminary Finals – the U12 Boys Div 1 and the U16 Boys Div 5 – you showed great endeavour guys. You can feel well satisfied with your efforts.

Now a reminder to all Juniors and their parentsUniforms Exchange is coming up. Guy James will be at St Clair this coming Sunday the 19th September, between 8.30 am and 11.30 am to facilitate the receipt and issuing of uniforms for the Boys. Those of you who are going up an age division will need to bring in your existing uniform and you will be issued with a new one for next season on payment of the $20 deposit. If you are not playing next season, and I hope you all are, you need to bring your uniform in anyway. Guy will also be at St Clair facilitating uniform exchange on Sunday 26th September and Sunday 10th October again from 8.30 am to 11.30 am. For the Girls, Jodie will be operating the same system on Sunday the 10th October from 8.30 am to 11.30 am. If for some reason you cannot make any of these dates could you please contact the appropriate person (Guy or Jodie) or the office (preferably by email) and arrangements can be made. This is a really important process as it results in a smooth transition from one age group to another and provides a low cost uniform service for all our families.

Our sincere thanks go to both Guy and Jodie for all their efforts in this vital area of our club. It is a big job and both have willingly undertaken responsibility for it and accomplished all the many tasks involved professionally and effectively.

To:  Managers of 2009/10 teams.  Can you please return to the office – preferably on the dates that Guy and Jodie will be at St Clair the First Aid Kits and drink baskets.

To Coaches Can all coaches please return the basketballs ASAP if not coaching in the 2010/11 season for new coaches to use.  If you are still coaching can you please let us know if you still have basketballs and in what condition.  Please get in touch with the office on wdbc@picknowl.com.au

Tim Squire can be contacted on  0400130096 for Managers issues and basketball reconciliation.

Now last but by no means least I would like to announce the inaugural recipient of our Sponsor of the Month Award. Sometimes our sponsors do not get the recognition that they deserve. Without them our club could not function – well not to the same level. They support our Mens and Womens ABA teams and relieve some of the financial strain on sustaining all our Junior teams. Please support our sponsors as they support your children and our club. When you do, let them know you are from WDBC – please!! A list of our Sponsors can be found on our Website. The link to our Website now appears to be working on Sportingpulse after a glitch on their part was resolved.

And so, the winner is – Abbott Printers & Stationers, cnr Port Road and South Road, Hindmarsh!!!! Not only does Sue and her husband Allan Young Sponsor us financially but they freely do a lot of our printing without cost and assist us with design/layout issues drawing on their considerable expertise. Sue is also a pivotal member of our Junior Committee and is at the hub of the emailing network developed by the Junior Committee. I really don’t know what we would do without their wonderful assistance. A fantastic effort and we salute both of you.  So come on all WDBC members, when you need printing or stationary supplies for the home, office, school or recreation (or anything else in between) go see Sue and you will get great value for money, the best service and the good feeling of supporting a fabulous WDBC sponsor and friend.

On one final note – we are still looking for volunteers for our new sub-committee system. No need to feel apprehensive. It won’t be a big commitment. Just a small hour or two a month. We look forward to hearing from you.

If any of you have anything that you wish to submit to this newsletter could you please email it to the office at  wdbc@picknowl.com.au

All contributions gratefully received.

Go Warriors!!

Kind Regards

Helen Gleeson
