President's Update 22nd July 2012

Special General Meeting.

Last Monday was a significant moment in the history of the EDJBA. Delegates, Executive members and Life members of the association met to debate and ratify a new constitution. That this was done in the time frame of one hour in my experience constitutes a record and is testament to the goodwill of the people present and the preparation and input of many people prior to the day. Constitutional change is difficult at the best of times and it was a great relief that it took such a short time to achieve.

I would like to personally thank all people involved in this process which took ten months to come to fruition.

The new constitution now has to be presented to the Consumer Affairs department for approval and adoption. Once this is done the new constitution comes into effect and will see it applied for the upcoming Annual General Meeting.

The constitution is based on the premise that the active clubs have control of the association and to that end the voting at General Meetings is biased to ensure they have the majority of votes.

Among major changes the power for clubs to determine changes to the by-laws has been adopted.

The Executive has been renamed the Committee of Management (CoM) and its number has been reduced to four office bearers and seven general committee members. The office bearers are president, vice president, treasurer and secretary, the latter who will act as the public officer for the association. A new clause allows the CoM to co-opt two members. This allows the CoM to recruit people with particular or special skills or talents to assist with the running of the association.

Although not enshrined in the constitution CoM members in the future will be expected to chair a sub-committee on various association activities including governance, development, club liaison, communication and competition. These sub-committees will make recommendations to the CoM for implementation.

It was a pleasing outcome for myself and the association and I go on record as thanking everyone involved in the process. The association can now progress with its plans for the future with a set of rules that gives guidelines but also flexibility to the CoM and the association’s members and participants.

Grading Forum

This Monday sees the second of two forums the association has planned for this year.

The Grading Forum has been designed to explain the methods used when grading teams and to get feedback on the grading systems in place and to examine better ways to grade teams.

The Referees Forum has been conducted and the outcome of that was to form a referees subcommittee to advise and make recommendations to the Committee of Management on refereeing matters. The purpose of the sub-committee is primarily to ensure a consistency for the officiating of games across the EDJBA.

It is hoped that the outcome of the Grading Forum will have a similar positive outcome. It is important to note that all people are welcome to this forum and to that end I encourage you to attend if you think you have a contribution to make. The forum is not limited to club delegates or nominees but is an open meeting. Not only are you welcome but we encourage you to bring along a friend. Please see details below.
