President's Update April 20th 2012

The Shift is almost complete

As I have advised you over the past couple of months I have been moving to Queenscliff in a seachange for my wife and myself.  We have now moved our goods and chattels to Queenscliff and sit surrounded by piles of “stuff”.

This has meant that I have been unable to connect to the internet for a period and therefore my flow of information to and from me has been limited.

I apologise for not writing re the Grand Finals but will do so in the next Weekly Update.  To all the teams that made finals well done and if successful congratulations.  I have received two letters re refereeing during the finals, surprise surprise and have replied to the writers in an appropriate way.

In replying I stated that the association is mindful of the standards we require of our referees and to address the issues raised a Referees Forum will be held in the very near future.  Jo Chu has taken responsibility for the convening of this important meeting and information will be coming out within the next week.

In saying that, we are also aware of the very difficult job referees have when final’s games can become tense and emotional affairs and thank them for their work in sometimes very trying circumstances.

Grading

Nominations for the grading committees have closed as of last Thursday.  Prior to the calling of nominations the following positions were filled.

Chair: David Bacon.

Boy’s Convenor: David Bacon

Girl’s Convenor: Andrew Harris

Dispute Resolution: David Hickman, David Bacon and Andrew Harris.

The Executive has approved a trial system for the 2012 Winter Season for grading.  This system was approved following recommendations by David Bacon and will operate for the grading season.  Once grading has finished it is intended that a Grading Forum will be held with all interested parties to assess the trial and make recommendations for the future operation of the grading phase of the basketball season.

To those who volunteered their time and expertise I say thank you and good luck. Your role is a vital one to ensure that players participate in a competition as even as possible to make their experience a meaningful and enjoyable one.

Executive Meeting

On Monday the Executive meets again and on the agenda there are a number of items including the setting of the date for the Special General Meeting to approve the new constitution, the acceptance of a mercy rule to be implemented for the winter season, the setting of dates for the grading forum and referees forum, discussion of the heat policy which has some inconsistencies in it, the branding of the association and a trial fixturing system to improve and streamline this important part of the association’s activities.

It looks like a busy night ahead for the office bearers.  On that note I wish all players and officials good luck for the winter season which promises to be bigger and better than those past.

Happy Hoops,

Ron Carlton

President.
