5 April: Lions' Women Claw to victory!

CENTRAL Districts’ women have taken one match this season to do what they couldn’t do all last season - win a game of basketball.

The Lions, who finished with a 0-18 record in 2010, triumphed 55-54 against South Adelaide in their Central ABL clash at Starplex last Saturday night, breaking a 20-month winning drought.

They last tasted victory against Eastern Mavericks at Starplex on July 18, 2009.

The new-look side - featuring such recruits as ex-Forestville guard Jess Mahony, Shay Bayly (ex-Southern) and Desinta Cummins (ex-Woodville) - trailed 44-34 at three-quarter time then by 13 points with about three minutes remaining, but mounted a last-ditch fightback.

Regrouping after using their final time-out, the Lions limited South’s scoring with smothering defence and found their groove at the offensive end.

Shenae Hosking came off the bench to make a crucial three-pointer and minutes later Kimberly Olsen made the winning shot

First-year Lions coach Tony Moore was proud of his players.

“The whole result was gained off of defensive intensity and hustle,” he said.

“All the girls - every last one of them - stepped up. It was just a great contribution by everyone.

“(When the buzzer sounded) everyone was off the bench, off the bleachers, on to the court, cheering on each other.”

Olsen led the Lions with 15 points and Lisa Wilson added 12. Mahony, who fouled out in the fourth quarter, had seven points, six rebounds, nine assists and three steals.

Moore said the come-from-behind win would lift his side’s confidence and belief.

The Lions could be boosted by the arrival of US import Alisha Heglund for their clash with West Adelaide at Port Adelaide this week.

In men’s action, Central lost to South 101-79 despite the best efforts of Daniel Carlin (24 points).
