U16 Nationals - Perth Day 1

Steph Talbot

U16 Boys New Zealand v SA Country

In this 'international" match the NZ men got off to a good start to see them out by 10 points by half way through the 1st quarter, only to see SA fight their way back to end the quarter only down by 4. The second quarter was a close affair with both teams trading baskets until a series of turnovers by SA saw NZ’s lead extend to 10 points again by the main break.

The second half saw much of the same with NZ’s Kirk Rangiawha leading the New Zealanders with 21 points along with Jordan Ngatai’s double-double (12pts, 12reb). SA’s Dylan Rawson had a great game to lead SA Country’s charge in the last half with a game high 25 points to go along with his 12 rebounds. But this was not enough as NZ won by what as a comfortable 17 points in the end.

NZ – 87 (K Rangiawha 21; M Holding 13; Jordan Ngatai 12pts, 12reb) defeated
SA Country – 70 (Dylan Rawson 25pts, 12reb; Chad Wingard 15; Jack Madgen 9)

U16 Women – QLD North v SA Country

Although both teams came out strong, it was SA who took the early lead, going up by 10 points in the first quarter. However, QLD wasn’t going to let this phase them as they not only erased SA’s lead, they took it thanks an Anna Mackay half time buzzer beater.

The second half was a grudge match as the lead changed nine times. That was until SA’s Isabelle Daniel and Taylor Falting hit two big three’s to help increase their lead to 12 with less than two minutes on the clock. This proved to be too big a task for the Queensland team as they eventually lost by 6 points. SA Country scoring was led by Stephanie Talbot who had 24 points along with 11 rebounds in a great start to the Championships.

SA Country – 86 (Stephanie Talbot 24pts, 11 reb; Alex Wilson 15; Issabel Daniel 14)
D North – 80 (K Hammond 15; T Evans 15; N Payne 14)
