Event Details
The 2009 Arafura Games Athletics will be divided into 2 divisions:
Under 18's - athletes turning 17 by 31 December 2009.
Open - all competitors 18 years and above.
All participating athletes must be a minimum of 15 years of age by 31 December 2009.
The athletics competition will also incorporate the Oceania Paralympic Championships.
The athletics competition will be held over 4 evenings under lights - Sunday 10th to Wednesday 13th of May 2009. The half marathon will be held on the morning of Sunday 17 May 2009. A full program of events will be held.

A Pre Competition Managers meeting will be held at the Darwin Athletic Stadium from 12pm on Saturday 9th May. Managers are asked to bring with them team lists.
Half Marathon Briefing will be on Saturday afternoon 16th May at 4:00pm Beach side of the Car Park opposite Lake Alexander (near the toilet block), East Point Reserve.

Event Location
The track and field competition will be held at the picturesque Arafura Stadium, centrally located at the Marrara Sporting Complex. This facility has a fully equipped athletic track and field centre with photo-finish electric timing. There are large change rooms and amenities at the stadium. Athletes will have full access to these facilities for training before and during the games except for competition times.
Arafura Stadium also has disabled access and will operate a canteen for the entirety of the athletics competition.
Event Rules
The Track and Field Athletic events and the half marathon will be conducted according to the rules of the IAAF and the published supplementary rules. Open technical specifications apply to all events. Qualifying standards apply to all events. Athletes are required to have their entry endorsed by their governing body.
Athletes with a disability may enter Arafura (able-bodied) events provided they enter the same OPC event and meet the minimum qualification criteria to be set at the discretion of the event organisers. Athletes may enter non OPC events on the Arafura Program as an open athlete (eg Hammer Throw) and must compete using open weights.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much will transport cost?
The Arafura Games Organisers will provide bus transfers for all teams on arrival and departure in Darwin. An official Games shuttle bus service will operate free of charge between accommodation houses and training and competition venues for all accredited participants.
What about accommodation for my team and officials?
Darwin has a variety of accommodation to suit all budgets, tastes and special requirements. Almost all of Darwin's accommodation houses are located close to the Central Business District (CBD) and a short drive from sporting venues. A bedbank service will be available closer to the Games.
