Hawks Gibson Saves The Day

With 3 minutes left in what was shaping as the Ringwood Hawks worst loss of the season, Hawks import Jacob Gibson decided to turn into NBA superstar Steph Curry and deliver his team one on the most unlikely wins in recent history against the Hume City Broncos.

After the excitement of last week’s dominant performance over Waverley, on Saturday night the Hawks looked flat and almost disinterested early in the game, but still had a slender lead at quarter time. Sensing an opportunity the grab a huge win over the reigning Champs, the Broncos caught fire, grabbed the lead and looked like a team playing well above their 7th position on the ladder.

Despite the lead changing many times during the second half, the game looked out of the Hawks reach with a little over three minutes left and trailing by 9 points. In a desperate move, Hawks Coach Ken Harrington made some substitutions; including inserting young star Matt Roberts in to game. At this time, Jacob Gibson must have found a phone booth somewhere and changed in to Superman.

Gibson went on a shooting spree that left the crowd at Hume City speechless. It started with a three pointer from the top of the key; then hit another, but it was only a 2 pointer as his foot was on the line. It was quicks points for the Hawks, but the Broncos were constantly scoring and still had control of the game.

The very next play Gibson stepped around a screen and nailed another three pointer and with 80 seconds left the Hawks were within 4. Finally the Hawks defense stepped up and they caused the Broncos to turn it over.

Hawks Guard Stefan Osborne took a quick shot with Gibson being guarded closely by two defenders that missed to the left, but the ball rebounded long and Nate Truman found Gibson on the move. He caught it and banked in an incredible three pointer from about 3 metres beyond the arc.

With the Hawks now just a point down, they again managed to force a turnover and a play was drawn up to free Gibson for another three. And he delivered yet again. Shaun Clarke provided a great screen, just giving Gibson the little bit of daylight he needed to put the dagger in to the stunned Broncos. The silent Broadmeadows stadium said it all as the ball sailed through to rescue the Hawks.

The Hawks had simply performed a modern basketball miracle and for Gibson, he finished with a game high 32 points, with 24 in the last quarter.

“We were not playing well and I felt I had let the team down so I thought I would get super aggressive.” Gibson said straight after the game.

“The shots felt good so I extended my range to further out and I had a bit of luck too. We will take the win; not that we played well.”

The remarkable win was still a timely reminder to the top placed Hawks that anything other than their best each week will be punished in a tough league and they will again be tested next week against two top teams in Casey and Knox. On Saturday night the Hawks travel to Casey before returning home on Sunday for the Eastlink Rivalry against Knox at 2pm.

RINGWOOD HAWKS 98 (Gibson 32, Fennell 21, Carke 17, Latham 10) defeated HUME CITY BRONCOS 95 at Broadmeadows Stadium.
