Hawks and Maroondah Lose a Leader

After countless years of supporting the Ringwood Hawks and the Maroondah area in general, the Maroondah Leader Community Newspapers has been officially shut down and will now just survive as some online stories as part of the Herald Sun group.

Local newspapers have always been an important tool for the promotion of local Business and Sports including Basketball, and proudly the Hawks were arguably the most well covered organization in all of the State. It was very rare that you would not see a Hawks article in the Sports section and the demise of the newspaper will leave a gaping hole for Sports and businesses alikein our local area.

Hawks NBL1 Head Coach Ken Harrington was disappointed to hear the news but said it was not that surprising after they stopped printing newspapers and went to digital when COVID-19 hit.

“It was very sad to get that email today.” Harrington said.

“Leader has been great to us and our relationship with Sports Coordinator David Turner has been special, DT has been a huge supporter of the Hawks and other sports and will be sorely missed.”

News Limited cut between 600 and 1000 jobs late last week and sadly Turner was one of those to be let go. The sports nut had served 21 years for the Leader Group and had this to say today about Basketball and those he has worked closely with over the years.

“I'd just like to say how much of an honour it has been to cover your sport for two decades. Whether WNBL, NBL1, SEABL or Big V, I have found the Basketball community to be passionate about its sport and always supportive of our coverage of it.” Turner said.

And even during this difficult time, Turner has kept his sense of humor with this final comment as he said goodbye.

“Best wishes to the Hawks and thank you for 21 wonderful years (which given I'm an ex-gymnast standing 5' 6", it's always amused me how much I've enjoyed covering basketball)”

On behalf of everyone at the Ringwood Hawks, we would just like to say a massive thanks to DT for his commitment to local sports over 21 years and good luck in your next endeavour.
