Hawks Scramble for Two Wins

The Ringwood Hawks will look at the Big V ladder this week and see they have added two more wins to their season, but their performances against Corio Bay and Diamond Valley were far from convincing over the weekend.

On Saturday night, the Hawks were expected to make light work of the undermanned Corio Bay Stingrays, but the visitors had other plans. The Hawks were unable to grab a firm hold of the game despite building an early ten point lead. Mike McCahey (25 points and 9 rebounds) was able to keep the offense rolling but the Stingrays were able to hang in the contest well in to the final quarter.

The Stingrays were able to score at will as the Hawks showed an inability to be able to put any pressure on the Stingray shooters.

“If we are going to be honest about it, we are one of the worst defensive teams in the league at the moment.” Hawks Coach Ken Harrington said.

“If we don’t make serious progress in this area then it could be a long season.”

Despite the defensive issues, the Hawks managed to keep the Stingrays at bay, finish off strongly and record a 19 point win.

Sunday’s game at Diamond Valley was always going to provide the Hawks with a challenge and that's exactly what they got. A slow start could have been costly, but the Hawks changed to a zone defense and worked their way back in to game. Jacob Gibson (29 points) hit a couple of long bombs and by half time the Hawks enjoyed a 2 point lead.

The game stayed close and in the final minutes, the Eagles pulled to within 2 points, but Gibson and Matt Snowball were able to close out the game from the foul line. Mike McCahey was again effective for the Hawks with 18 points while Matt Fennell nailed 13.

The Hawks currently sit in second place with 6 wins from 8 games, but Harrington though did not mince words post game when reflecting on his teams performances in the two wins.

“Our guys need to change their attitudes and quickly.” He said

“Some serious work defensively and a lesson in tem first is on the cards this week.”
