NWBU Under 22 Review - Tuesday 3rd November
In front of a good crowd, Wynyard women managed to defeat Smithton in a high standard, exciting game of basketball. It was not until the last quarter that the Wildcats used their bench depth to draw away with the victory.
Penguin women were just too big and strong for the young Devonport team, winning comfortably. Penguin’s Madison Hayward had a very good game, scoring 14 points.
Somerset’s defensive pressure nullified Burnie’s interior game. This restricted Burnie to scoring from outside the three point line, which they did at a very low percentage. The consistent Sammi Phillips continued her excellent form scoring a game high 27 points.
Top of the ladder Ulverstone women flexed their muscle against the inexperienced Latrobe team. Ulverstone have found very good form leading into the finals and presently are the team to beat.
Wynyard men were a whisker away from winning their first game of the season against Smithton. In a fast paced, close contest, Smithton just happened to be in front when the final siren sounded. Daniel Bransden had a good game for the Saints.
In the upset of the round, the young Devonport men had a great victory over Penguin in overtime. In a very strong, physical game, Devonport was well led by Brady Armstrong, who had a game high 23 points.
Burnie’s experienced players took complete control of the game in the first half, leading 49 – 18 at half time against Somerset. It is now just about impossible for Somerset to make the finals with only three games to go.
In an even, fast paced skilful game, Latrobe stepped up their defensive pressure in the third quarter to set themselves up for an important win. Jack Triffett continued his good season scoring 20 points.
