Record numbers in State teams
THE Murray Bridge Basketball Association has had a record number of its players selected in South Australian country teams to play at two State tournaments early in 2009.
The unprecendented number of 17 junior basketballers and two coaches were chosen to attend the Australian Junior Country Cup at Albury NSW, from January 10 to 17.
The cup is attended by country representative teams from New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and New Zealand.
The popular country cup will be celebrating its 23rd year in 2009.
SA Country Basketball is also sending a team of both under 15 girls and boys to the Pacific Coast Slam tournament at Port Macquarie, from January 12 to 19.
Murray Bridge's Gemma Leonard has been selected to attend this event and is in the under 15 girls side. Referee Sam Le Gallou will also attend this tournament.
The tournaments have proved to be an opportunity for junior basketballers to experience representative selection and will strengthen the junior country program.
Murray Bridge Basketball Association president David Schenscher said it was a wonderful effort to have so many players chosen in the teams and a credit to the strength of basketball in Murray Bridge.
"This is a fantastic achievement for our association," he said.
