Gliders pipped at the post by Germany

The Gliders began this game confidently with a nice outside shot from Clare Burzysnki to put the first points on the board, and a number of fastbreak lay-ups from Kylie Gauci to lead early.

It was an all round effort in the first quarter with all starters contributing to the team’s scoring. However lapses in defensive transition did allow the Germans to make 5 fastbreak opportunities, and still be in touch at quarter time, 18 – 12.

The second quarter saw the Germans claw their way back into the game with an 8-5 run on the scoreboard half way through the quarter to only be down by 3.

Coach Hewson tried to find a combination that would get the job done for him making frequent substitutions throughout this period of the game.  Some nice offensive patience by the Gliders in the second part of this quarter saw them ahead by 8 at the major break.

The Aussies were able to extend their lead to 10 points at the beginning of the second half before the Germans went on a 6 – 0 run with the Gliders to struggle to come up with answers.

Australia then regathered and were able to hold onto their lead, leading by 2 points at ¾ time.

Germany began the 4th quarter like they finished the 3rd, and a lack of offensive execution resulted in a number of missed shots leading the Gliders to only scoring 4 points in the quarter.

The Germans were able to string some good offensive play together with good movement and passing seeing them lead by 3 points at the final siren.

Coach Hewson’s comment at the end of the game – “We are getting closer to where we want to be, and need to consistently reward ourselves.”

The Gliders now have 4 hours break before a quick turnaround to take on the USA for the first time on this tour.
