WheelKings Adopt Ryde as Home Base

The Ryde Aquatic Centre (RAC) will host many of the best wheelchair basketball players in Australia, through the upcoming winter season of the National Wheelchair Basketball League (NWBL) competition, following the adoption of the multi-function facility by the Wenty Leagues Wheelkings as their new home base.

The Wheelkings are one of three NSW-based teams playing in the NWBL and tip-off their season at the RAC on Saturday May 24, with a home game against fierce perennial rivals the West Sydney Razorbacks.

Both of these teams are laden with Australian and International Paralympians and should combine to start the season off at a cracking pace.

The Wheelkings will be led by Dutch Paralympian Koen Jansens, who is a veteran of numerous World Championships and Paralympic Games and is widely regarded as one of his countries best-ever players.

Supporting Jansens will be three members of the Australian Men's wheelchair basketball squad (Rollers) in Bill Latham, Jeremy Van Asperen and Craig Cannane.

In addition, the Wheelkings will field three members of the Australian Women's Wheelchair Basketball team (Gliders), in Kylie Gauci, Liesl Tesch and Tina McKenzie.

The Razorbacks are led by two Australian Male Paralympians in Troy Sachs and Brendan Dowler, along with female Paralympians Katie Hill and Sarah Stewart.

South African International Nick Taylor rounds out the last of the big names in the star-studded Razorbacks line-up and with this amount of talent all involved in one game, the action promises to be enthralling.

The NWBL season begins on Saturday May 24 at the Ryde Aquatic Centre, with the Wheelkings and Razorbacks locking wheels at the tip-off at 11.30am.
