Geelong extends its senior women's program to three

2012 will see the region’s elite women’s basketball program the Lady Supercats extend from two to three teams.

Geelong’s newest team has been accepted into the Big V’s Division 1 competition.

A position that will complement the existing two teams competing in SEABL and Big V’s state youth championships and fill a much needed void in the women’s program in Geelong.

The need for this team has emerged on the back of sustained growth and ever increasing quality of Basketball Geelong’s club based competition.

A sentiment echoed by Basketball Geelong’s General Manager Amy Hawthorne.

“Girls in Geelong can play ball, the number of quality players in the region demanded that this team be established”.

The Geelong Supercats have been quick to sign experienced coach Darren Busuttil to lead this talented squad.

Darren brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience. He previously coached the State Championship women’s team in 2000-2001 and 2008-2009.

“I am looking forward to coaching a team of girls that are just excited to get the opportunity to play at  this level” Coach Busutill said

“It’s early days but the team is look good with an even balance of good sized players, as well as also having the option of speed and experience.” He continued.

The Geelong Supercats will announce the team shortly with the 2012 season tipping off in March.
