Big V Preview Finals Week 3

Geelong pulled off a stunning comeback against Melbourne University to book a berth in the Big V Division One men’s grand final series for the third time in fourth years.

Trailing one-nil going into last Saturday night’s game two against the Black Angels at The Arena Annexe, the Cats found themselves staring down the barrel of a straight sets exit as the reigning champions held a 20-point advantage with 1:48 remaining the second quarter.

Geelong found a couple of late baskets before half-time, but was still 16 points in arrears at the main break.

From that point the Cats dominated the series.

They went on a 22-6 run to level the scores with 4:03 left in the third quarter.

The match again tightened-up, with the Cats and Uni tied at 59-all heading into the final period.

But it was Geelong’s experience that shone through as they held on for a gritty win 84-79 win. In contrast, Sunday’s game three was all Geelong, romping to a 104-67 victory.

“(It was) a great win heading into the Grand Final series,” coach Shayne Bow said.

Jason Reardon had another stunning weekend.

The MVP favourite had 21 points, 19 rebounds and six assists on in game three, after 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists on Saturday night.

He had plenty of support, with veteran duo Marty De Lange and Paul Hutchison, talented forward Chris Brown and guard pairing Chris Daniele and Patty Phillips all having solid weekends.

Bow is already claiming underdog status for the series against Warrnambool.

The Cats and Seahawks met twice during the season, with one win apiece.

The last meeting was on July 9 in Warrnambool where the home side triumphed 81-76.

However, Reardon was absent that night.

Talented youngster Nathan Sobey, wily veteran Bobby Cunningham, import Cameron Mitchell and playing coach Tim Gainey are the keys to the Seahawks’ success.

A tight defensive game will be needed to roll Warrnambool and have one up on them coming back to The Arena the following week.” Bow said
