Big V Preview Round 7

Marty De Lange

Division One Men (4th 4-2): vs. Hawthorn (5th 3-3) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 12.00pm

Doubts over the Cats’ ability to get the job done without Jason Reardon continue to grow following their shock 64-61 loss to a struggling Sunbury. Geelong started well enough, leading by nine points at the main break. However, shooting woes after half-time came back to bite them, with their clip failing to hit 30 per cent in both the third and fourth quarters. The result left coach Shayne Bow frustrated with his group. “Many opportunities were lost due to lack of determination and second efforts,” Bow said. Paul Hutchison (26 points) and Marty De Lange (10) were the only Cats to score in double figures. This week’s clash with Hawthorn is an important one, with Geelong able to put a two game break between them and the Magic if they can take the points. “We will need to re-adjust our game plan and start doing all the things we talk about,” Bow said.  Reardon, who played four games for four wins in 2011, will suit up.

State Youth Championship One Men (6th 3-3): vs. Eltham (8th 2-4) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 2.00pm

The absence of Michael Rebula and Lachie Headlam through Supercats’ commitments didn’t help, however coach Luke Beauglehall would be well aware they wouldn’t have made a 54 point difference between the Cats and Diamond Valley. The Eagles handed Geelong a 122-68 hiding to prove why they are the dominant team in the State Youth Championship. The match was over as a contest at quarter time, with the visitors outscoring Geelong 31-8. Ben McCawley continued his solid run of form, finishing with 24 points and seven rebounds, however he was the only Cat able to match Diamond Valley’s imposing frontline. How Luke Beauglehall’s charges respond to such a flogging will be of interest. Rebula and Headlam will both be back, with the Supercats not in action on Sunday. It’s the first meeting between the Cats and Wildcats in 2011 and is must-win for Geelong if they’re to stay in touch with the State Youth Championship top four.

State Youth Championship Women (2nd Terrill Conference 4-2): vs. Diamond Valley (1st Terrill Conference 6-0) @ Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre, Saturday 7.30pm

Geelong goes into its top of the table Terrill Conference clash with Diamond Valley full of confidence after holding off Eltham 70-60. The late inclusion of Lady Supercat Jess Watson proved to be a godsend for Kat Clancy. The talented big was nigh on unstoppable, finishing with 29 points, 16 rebounds and three assists in playing all but 54 seconds of the clash with the Wildcats. “She dominated the scoreboard and Eltham didn't know how to stop her,” Clancy said. Talented young guard Sophie Templeton was also impressive with 14 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Ebony Tannouri had a season-high 13 points, while Jess Barnard was strong on the boards with an impressive haul of 16 rebounds. Everyone played their role when on the court and the bench ignited in the last quarter, providing great support for those on the floor,” Clancy said. The availability of Watson for the clash with the reigning champion is still unknown, with the Lady Supercats having first call on her services.
