Men's and Women's Division 1 Semi Finals

Division 1 Men

It will be a showdown between traditional power YMCA and relative newcomer Christian College in the Basketball Geelong Division One men's summer grand final.

YMCA advanced to yet another grand final with a 55-43 win over Try Boys in one semi-final, while Christian College cruised past Vytis, 71-27, in the other at The Arena on Tuesday night.

Led by veteran Jordan Hill (10 points) and Tristan Johnson (10 points), YMCA got a spread effort on offence as Chris Brown (eight points) and Kris Van Parreren (eight points) did their bit.

It was a similar story for Try Boys as it got decent efforts from Martin De Lange (10 points) and Steve Hyland (nine points), but it lost a big man when Glenn Sharp (six points) fouled out.

The semi-final between undefeated Christian College and underdog Vytis, back in the Division One playoffs for the first time in almost 25 years, was never in doubt.

Supercats Nick Owusu (20 points) and Keith Harrison (17 points) led Christian College, while big man Seb Loader (13 points) had an inside presence.

Only Romas Liebich (12 points) scored in double figures for Vytis, which simply struggle to match the depth and strength of Christian College, but will be encouraged by the achievement of making the finals.

Division 1 Women

TRY Boys and Rovers will square off for the BG Division One women's summer title after a night of semi-final upsets.

Third-placed Try Boys ousted second-placed Pivot City, while fourth-placed Rovers pulled the major upset by beating top-of-the-ladder YMCA.

Having squeezed into the finals after a three-way tie for fourth place, Rovers showed they were more than making up the numbers by beating YMCA, 48-43.

Geelong Lady Cats guard Prue Kenny (14 points) led the way for Rovers, who also got solid efforts from Kath Asmussen (eight points) and Lana Ryde-Kowalski (eight points).

Another Lady Cat, Charmaine Ferguson (18 points) almost played a lone hand for YMCA, but got some support from guard Vick Mallon (eight points).

Try Boys showed they will be tough to beat for the title with a 53-31 win over Pivot City.

Forward Anisa Sijersic (13 points) led four players in double-digit scoring for Try Boys, who also got 12 points from Ash Salter.

By contrast, Pivot City did not have a player score in double figures and was led by playing-coach Sarah Jeffreys (nine points).

The grand finals will be played next Tuesday at The Arena with the women at 8pm and the men at 9.15pm.
