Pivot City women cause an upset in Division One

Pivot City has continued its impressive progress, moving into third place and eyeing second spot in the Basketball Geelong Division One women’s championship.

Extending its unbeaten run to five games, Pivot beat top-of-the-ladder YMCA, 59-47, at The Arena on Tuesday night.

Taking advantage of centre Candice Rogers’ absence from the YMCA line-up, Pivot pulled away in the fourth quarter as Olivia Cameron (16 points) got hot and Mel Aherne (15 points) played a key role.

Charmaine Ferguson (26 points) played a lone hand for YMCA as its only scorer in double-digits, but it was almost enough to get the job done.

Rovers Hawks enjoyed a rare win, beating Sharks, 71-29, in a lopsided encounter.

Ellie Stevens (24 points) and Jess Watson (15 points) led four players in double-figure scoring for Rovers Hawks, while Kelly Snell (10 points) was the best for Sharks.

In the other game, Try Boys recorded a 20-point win over Rovers.

Christian College Eagles and YMCA continue to impress as the teams most likely to fight out the BG Division One men’s championship.

The top two teams in the men’s standings recorded comfortable wins on Tuesday night at The Arena to re-assert their championship credentials.

Christian College beat fourth-placed Pivot City, 62-45, while YMCA took care of fifth-placed Sharks, 81-58.

Nick Owusu (14 points) and Chris Dunlop (12 points) led a spread offensive effort for Christian College, while Nick Kent (17 points) was the high scorer for Pivot City.

YMCA was led by Jared Powell (41 points) as he torched Sharks, who got 14 points from James Decampo.

The other team with an eye on the title, Try Boys Bears, showed no mercy for their younger club-mates, Try Boys, winning 82-50.

Big man Marty De Lange (20 points) led the third-placed Bears, while Robert Harding (nine points) led the opposition.

Vytis picked up an important win, 76-37 over Sharks Runners as John Harrison (21 points) topped all scorers, YMCA Cougars topped Rovers, 88-34, with 27 points from Peter Van Der Burg.
