Division One Men & Women Game Reviews - Round 5

Basketball Geelong Division One Men’s Championship has had its first upset for the season with Pivot City inflicting the first loss to ladder leaders Christian College Eagles.

Led by Trevor Hartwick (21 points) and Supercat Daniel George (20 points), Pivot City held off a second half surge by Christian College to take out the win, 78-69, at The Arena on Tuesday night.

Big V’s Keith Harrison was dominant for Christian College with 19 points and was well-supported by Youth League big man Brett Seljak (15 points).

YMCA remained undefeated as they carved out a 25-point victory over middle-of-the-road team Sharks, 71-46.

Jordan Hill was outstanding with 24 points, shooting five three-pointers for the game, while Tristan Johnson (15 points) and Chris Brown (13 points) added to the tally.

Sharks improved in the second half but were unable to make up the difference, despite the efforts of Dane Bow (13 points) and Shane Hunter (10 points).

Fellow ladder leaders Try Boys Bears were too strong for club mates Try Boys, 69-54.

Club stalwart Paul Hutchison proved unstoppable with 25 points for the Bears and was well-supported by Nathan Pigott (14 points) and Martin De Lange (12 points).

Chris Daniele was best for Try Boys with 14 points, while Youth League players Robert Harding and James Swallow contributed 11 points each.

Youth League captain, Steven Wiasak (14 points) led Vytis to a 26-point victory over the young Sharks Runners, 70-44.

Emmerson Varley was best for Sharks Runners with a game high 18 points and was aided by Callum Dennis (13 points).

YMCA Cougars dominated with an outstanding first half over Rovers, 93-58.

Cougars’ Mitchell Herbert was the main scorer with an outstanding 30 points, while best for Rovers was Lucas Kenny (23 points).

 

 

YMCA remains top of the BG Division One Women’s Championship ladder with a strong win over the young Rovers Hawks, 65-37, on Tuesday night.

Although there were only five points in it at half time, YMCA was relentless in the second half, with Lady Cats Charmaine Ferguson (22 points) and Vicki Mallon (18 points) leading the charge.

Best for Rovers Hawks was forward Jess Watson with 11 points, while Jess Barnard and Sarah Breed both added eight points.

In a tight match, Rovers set themselves up for the win with an outstanding third quarter against Pivot City scoring 21 points to just two, and took out the match, 71-51.

Tania Du Plessis and Lana Ryder-Kowalski were once again dominant for Rovers with 21 points apiece, while Lady Cat Prue Kenny added 15.

Pivot City was led by Basketball Geelong Under-18 representative players Kelsey Browne (16 points) and Ebony Tannouri (13 points).

Try Boys had an easy win over bottom-of-the-ladder Sharks, 77-42.

Lady Cat twins Chantelle and Katherine Brockett led the way for Try boys with 31 and 26 points respectively.

Sharks were led by Kelly Snell (12 points) and Meghan Kelly (11 points) as they struggle to get a win on the board.
