Victorian Junior Championship

 Under 12 Girls Qualifying Final

Geelong Cats 31 lost to Altona 32

Top Scorers: Z. McKeegan 13, O. Virt 6, S. Degiacomi 4

Coach’s Comment:  “Giving Altona a 14 -2 lead in the first quarter always meant we were going to play catch up basketball. To our girls credit we got back into the game in the second half, only to be beaten by a basket in a tight finish.”

Under 16 Girls Round Elimination Final

Geelong Cats 46 def. Bulleen (2) 37

Coach’s Comment: “The retirement for the coach is put on hold for a little bit longer as the girls went into the first final not having defeated the fifth place team this season.  However, like the deaf frog, no one told the players.  We come out of the blocks again well and held the advantage for the whole game.  We increased the lead to around double figures for the majority of the match, and just before three-quarter time, we allowed the Boomers back into it a bit.  We then knuckled down in the last quarter and did the things that we had to do – getting stops on defence and making the shots that are given to us.  An offensive rebound count in our favour of 29, kept the scoreboard pressure on all night.  Bronte Burke maintained her season form at both ends of the floor and Sarah Welfare stayed strong again down the stretch when we needed it.  Keep the lights turned on, sweep the floors and unlock the gym – we have another game to play.”

Under 12 Boys Elimination Final

Geelong Cats 38 def. Werribee 36

Top Scorers: H. Marshall 16, L. Hill 10, D. Alcorace 5

Coach’s Comment: “Success at finals time relies on everyone making a contribution when it`s their time to step up, and that`s exactly what we got. We managed to turn the negative of losing Jamie for the night to illness into motivation to make sure he hadn`t played his last game with us yet. Werribee came out hard, and it became a game of momentum swings. Trailing most of the night, we pulled out some big plays and snatched the lead for good in the last quarter. Our intensity and desperation on ‘D’ paid off big time at the end with some huge stops and offensive boards to cling to our lead and move on to next week. Bring on Diamond Valley!!!”

Victorian Junior League Four

Under 18 Boys Semi Final

Geelong Cats (2) 31 def. Sandringham (2) 29

Top Scorers: N. Lemke 12, D. Duggan 5, J. Edwards 5, Z. Moore 5

Coach’s Comment:  “We now have a week off and will face either Sandringham (2) or Sunbury (2) in the Grand Final. What a nail biter! The margin see-sawed all the way through and was never more than 6 points. We were only up 13-11 at half time. We had a few too many turnovers. But, some serious 'you CANNOT have the ball' attitudes counteracted that. It all came down to the last few minutes- one point up, one point down, one point up, one point down. With about 30 seconds to go we made an 'I-dont-believe-that-went-in-did-you-see-what-he-did!!' shot to put us in the lead. The ball went down the other end and Sandringham managed to squeeze one last ditch effort at the hoop. The ball went round and round the rim and rolled out into the capable hands of our tall guy. He held onto it for a few timely seconds then passed to our surest bet on the run. Sandringham must have thought so to as his opponent grabbed our man’s singlet just before the buzzer for unsportsmanlike foul and sent him to the line. One in, one out, game over!
