Big V Geelong Preview (Finals Week Two)
Geelong Cats (13-7)
Big V Youth League Two Semi-Final
vs. Hawthorn (17-3) @ Boorondara Sports Complex, Saturday 7.30pm
The Geelong Youth League team kept alive its hopes of a third title in four years with a gritty 108-96 win over Whittlesea in front of a big crowd at The Arena Annexe on Sunday afternoon. Guard Emerson Varley starred for the young Cats with 24 points, while captain Steve Wiasak returned to form with 21 points, including 13-of-17 from the charity stripe. They now meet Hawthorn at Boorondara Sports Complex on Saturday night, with the prize a spot in the three-game grand final series. The Magic are coming off an 85-54 smashing of Sunbury in Sunday’s qualifying final. If the Cats can overcome the minor premier, they’ll meet either Sunbury or Altona in the three-game grand final series starting on August 15. Geelong and Hawthorn met twice during the regular season, winning one apiece. However that will be irrelevant heading into Saturday night’s clash, with the two teams last meeting way back on April 19, when the Cats won a defensive battle 68-59. Geelong will be hoping to get back shooter Simon Evans from an ankle injury he suffered at training a fortnight ago.
