Big V Geelong Preview (Round 14)

Keith Harrison

Geelong Lady Cats (2-12)

Big V State Championship

vs. Diamond Valley (6-8) @ Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Saturday 8.00pm

The end of the season can’t come soon enough for the Geelong Lady Cats after Saturday’s embarrassing three point loss to cellar-dweller Eltham. The only good news is that the Cats are unlikely to end up with the wooden-spoon, with Eltham needing two wins for the rest of the season to pass Geelong. The Cats travel to Diamond Valley on Saturday night knowing they can match it with the Eagles, having pushed them to six points in an overtime thriller on Mother’s Day. Coach Darren Busuttil will be hoping to see his side shoot the ball better than they have been, after coming in at less than 30% against the Wildcats. Maddy Taylor is one Lady Cat who needs to find her range, after going 3-of-17 on the weekend.

Geelong Cats (8-9)

Big V Division One

vs. Coburg (3-14) @ Coburg Basketball Stadium, Saturday 7.30pm

The equation is simple for the Cats on Saturday night- beat Coburg and keep their finals chances alive. A loss would be almost fatal for Greg Smith’s side, which has dropped five straight games, and gone from being in contention for a top two spot to now being in danger of missing the finals. Coach Smith is hopeful of veteran duo Seb Loader (hamstring) and Keith Harrison (ankle) getting back towards full fitness in the coming weeks. The previous meeting between the Cats and the Giants back in round two resulted in a one-point win for Coburg. However their fortunes have plummeted since then, dropping their past six games.

Geelong Cats (10-4)

Big V Youth League Two

vs. Chelsea (3-12) @ Chelsea Stadium, Saturday 6.00pm

It’s also must win for the Youth League Cats when they travel to Chelsea on Saturday night, but not because there’s a play-off berth on the line. Dave Brown’s squad are genuine contenders to land a third Youth League Two title in four years, but can’t afford to drop the clash with the Gulls if they want to finish top two. Coach Brown won’t need to remind his side Chelsea got them back in round three on The Arena Showcourt 82-80. Steve Wiasak will still be missing, which means Ben Scannell will again be expected to carry the scoring load, which he has done admirably in recent weeks, including 20 in last week’s win over Keilor.
