Big V Geelong Preview (Round 12)

Chris Brown

Geelong Lady Cats (2-10)

Big V State Championship

vs. Bulleen (9-3) @ The Arena Annexe Sunday 3.00pm

The Lady Cats are on a four game losing streak, and it doesn’t get any easier for Darren Busuttil’s roster with a clash against a play-off bound Bulleen. Audrey Muse (11.6 ppg. 9.0 rpg) has lived up to the hype surrounding her arrival from the United States, and is finally getting some much needed scoring support from Maddy Taylor (8.6 ppg). In a blow for the Lady Cats, foot stress fractures look set to end the 2009 season of back-up guard Tash Daffy. The Boomers are a vastly improved unit on their 2008 combination. Much of that can be attributed to the addition of former Lady Cat Candice Rogers, who is in all-star contention averaging 12ppg and 10.8 rpg.

Geelong Cats (8-6)

Big V Division One

vs. Sunbury (11-2) @ Boardman Stadium, Saturday 8.00pm

vs. Bulleen (11-3) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 1.00pm

It’s a massive weekend in the context of the season for the Cats, with games against championship contenders Sunbury and Bulleen. Greg Smith’s charges could fall out of the top six with two losses. However two wins will keep alive the Cats’ slim hopes of a top two finish. They look set to again be without veteran centre Sebastian Loader (hamstring), so will again rely heavily on Marty De Lange and Chris Brown to do much of the heavy work inside. Coach Smith will also be looking for an improved shooting performance. Geelong was terrible in the first half of the loss to the Magic, shooting at less than 25 percent. Paul Hutchison went 4-of-20 from the field, while former Warrnambool guard JJ Paton was 0-of-9.

Geelong Cats (9-4)

Big V Youth League Two

vs. Whittlesea (9-4) @ Mill Park Stadium, Sunday 1.30pm

The third-placed Youth League Cats can go a long way to consolidating a top-two berth with a win against Whittlesea, who sit second on the ladder. When the two teams met on May 17, the Pacers snuck away from The Arena Annexe with a 102-97 win. League MVP contender Steve Wiasak (22.3 ppg, 13.9 rpg) will again be missing after missing the Cats’ last game on May 31 while on division one duty. He’ll be in Lithuania as part of the Australian Lithuanian team. Dave Brown’s boys will be champing at the bit to return to action after a three week break, and the former Scottish international will be on his roster to start well against Whittlesea.
