Under 16 Boys Round 3
Geelong Cats 56 drew with Keilor 56
Top Scorers: G. Blagojevic 14, J. Pupavac 14, B. Mayes 9
Coach’s Comment: “Playing a home game at Werribee against Keilor with two players out, one more injured early in the contest and coming off a five-game losing streak gave the boys from Geelong a do or die attitude that should carry through for the rest of the season. This was a great game, full of intensity and many lead changes right up to the pulsating ending. The first half was nothing short of an arm wrestle as both teams had chances to go to a small lead only to give that up in a tightly fought contest. By three-quarter time, and both teams on 46 points the game was certainly in the balance. With only seconds left and Keilor having a five point lead things looked grim for Geelong. A nice three-pointer with about five seconds on the game clock meant we had to foul the inbound pass for any hope. First shot goes in and we rebound the ball from the second attempt and take it over half way for a forced three-point attempt under extreme pressure. Swish, the shot goes in, crowd goes wild and the game ends in a draw. That’s why we play basketball!”
Under 12 Girls Round 3
Geelong Cats 35 def. Sandringham 33
Top Scorers: Z. McKeegan 14, E. Braslis 8, Q. Murphy 5
Coach’s Comment: “Although we started with a great first quarter (12-2) to their credit Sandringham took the game right up to us until the dying seconds where we managed to hold them off and come away with a two-point win.”

Geelong Cats 53 lost to Ringwood 56

Coach’s Comment: “We jumped out of the blocks very well and were cruising to a double-digit lead at quarter time, when we decided that we would abandon what had got us there in the first place – team oriented basketball. We failed to honour the pass ahead on transition, we failed to hit the open man or put the ball through sets of hands to create an open shot. We were also hurt on defensive transition, standing and watching their fast break keep them in the game. Although we had the last possession and a drawn up play worked – operation successful but the patient died; and we were left to lament another one that got away. We were well served with creditable games from Bronte Burke, Sarah Welfare and tough work from Nikki Peacock.”

Geelong Cats 60 def. Waverley 36
Top Scorers: H. Marshall 18, J. Morwood 9, L. Hill 7
Coach’s Comment: “In front of a loud home crowd the boys put on a show of smothering defence and smooth offensive execution. We were able to shut down key players and played well in transition on both ends. A quick start was supported by strong impact off the bench, with all nine playing ferocious, smart ball. Great team effort boys.”

Under 18 Boys Round 13
Geelong Cats (2) 69 def. Nunawading (3) 51
Top Scorers: N. Lemke 14, J. McFall 12, D.Duggan
Coach’s Comment: “Nunawading, depleted by injuries, could only field five players. We were able to practice some different things and swap some positions, to play out of our comfort zone. We shot well and defended reasonably, though nowhere near our best. We look forward to some thinking time over the break to prepare to cement the rest of the season.”

Under 14 Boys Round 13
Geelong Cats (2) 49 def. Craigieburn (2) 33
Top Scorers: B. Carey 13, J. Willis 10, A. Stone 10
Coach’s Comment: “We got the job done offensively but struggled on the glass and in defence, losing the rebound count and letting through more than 30 points for the game. Our emphasis has been on creating easy scores but Craigieburn did this a bit too easily on Friday. But, I'm sure we'll learn from it and be back to our best for the Regional Challenge on July 15.”
